Job Purpose

To work in the areas of prevention, protection and response to minimise and actively reduce the risk to life and damage to property in the community.

To protect life and property and to serve the community by utilising operational resources and providing solutions to unforeseeable events through safe and effective means, identified through Risk Assessment and delivered in a professional and considerate manner in accordance with the Integrated Risk Management Plan (IRMP).

To work within and actively promote the Core Values of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Principal Accountabilities

Community Safety

Through giving advice, demonstration and instruction, inform and educate the community to improve awareness of safety matters in accordance with the objectives of the organisation. This will include identifying relevant groups, selecting the required information and materials. You will need to take account on your actions with regards to the protection of the environment.

Saving and Preserving Endangered Life

Through search, rescue and providing treatment and support at operational incidents, save and preserve endangered life. This may require you to enter hazardous environments and assist casualties to a place of safety. You must be clear as to the tasks and when to report and to whom the outcome of your actions.

Resolving Operational Incidents

By the correct use of equipment, identification of risks and raising these with those responsible for risk assessment and supporting colleagues, resolve a range of operational incidents. You must work within your agreed levels of authority and responsibility.

Supporting Operational Response

By collecting information on risks and resources in the community and by maintaining internal resources in terms of operational equipment, support an effective operational response. You should work within your own level of knowledge and skill and inform relevant people of information obtained relating to risk.

Protecting the Environment

By mitigating damage, using appropriate decontamination and ensuring support is provided to those involved, protect the environment from the effects of hazardous materials at an operational incident. You must confirm your objectives with the relevant person and work within your agreed levels of authority and responsibility.

Identifying Fire Safety Hazards

Through your normal daily activities Fire Safety deficiencies must be passed promptly to the relevant people for action.

Effective Personal Performance

By establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, take responsibility for personal performance to improve and develop your own skills. This will include obtaining feedback, updating development plans and being proactive towards personal development.

8 Physical Fitness

By maintaining the required level of physical fitness you will maintain the capacity to meet the physical demands placed upon the role as determined by the Service Policy in force at that time.

9 Developing Colleagues in the Workplace

Through the communication of your own skills and knowledge you should assist in the development of colleagues in the workplace. This will include encouraging colleagues to ask for help and support. You will need to seek advice from other relevant people where the level of knowledge requested is outside your level of authority or competence.

10 Driving and Manoeuvring Fire Service Vehicles (if required of the postholder)

Drive, manoeuvre and redeploy fire service vehicles to incidents or required locations.

11 Equality and Diversity

By working within and actively supporting the Service policies on Equality and Diversity and Fairness and Dignity at work you will demonstrate compassion, care and understanding in your dealings with workplace colleagues and the public.

12 Health and Safety

You must adopt safe systems of work when performing work activities. You must ensure that you do not compromise either your own Health and Safety or that of others through your actions.
