JOB TITLE: Lead Custodian

DEPARTMENT: Facilities and Grounds FLSA: Non-Exempt

LOCATION: Union Campus LEVEL: 104

REPORTS TO: Custodial Supervisor DATE: 07/14/09

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provide leadership and guidance to custodial workers on the assigned shift in addition to performing regular custodial duties, set up and project work.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

n  Complete task logs and conduct weekly inventory of supplies.

n  Meet with Custodial Supervisor to review daily work orders, special events, and discuss upcoming events with custodial needs.

n  Process work orders for facilities usage.

n  Check facilities requests each day to plan and schedule custodial work for set-up and project work in certain areas. Project work includes top scrubbing and waxing tile and concrete floors; extracting carpets; spray buffing; spot cleaning carpet; top scrubbing quarry tile; shower scrubbing and restrooms.

n  Arrange and move furniture, tables, chairs, desks, file cabinets in and out of offices, classrooms, off campus storage.

n  Assist with special events by setting up and tearing down.

n  Assist in training custodial staff in proper use of custodial equipment, chemicals, and cleaning procedures.

n  Ensure Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are updated and followed.

n  Ensure that assignments are completed in a safe, proper, and timely manner and oversee and support assigned custodians in the performance of their assignments.

n  Provide direction and up-to-date communication to employees.

n  Wear proper protective equipment while performing job duties (ie, goggles, helmet, back brace, knee pads).

n  Perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques, and standards in a safe manner and with minimal supervision.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

n  Adjustment of hours involving evening and/or weekend work will be required.

n  Assist with snow removal.

n  Perform other related job duties as may be assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

n  Knowledge of department and college policies, procedures, and practices with the ability to answer work related questions; and/or interpret and apply these guidelines correctly in various situations.

n  Ability to identify what information is needed by others for effective actions.

n  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

n  Knowledge of chemicals usage.

n  Knowledge of MSDS guidelines.

n  Knowledge of Protective Personal Equipment.

n  Good oral and written communication skills.

n  Ability to understand instructions given orally and in writing.

n  Knowledge of cleaning equipment and procedures when cleaning different types of flooring.

n  Knowledge of campus layout.

n  Follow instructions or work orders; and/or read routine sentences, instructions, regulations, or procedures.

n  Maintain close communication with custodians, regarding concerns, assistance, or supplies needed.

n  Communicate using routine sentences; complete routine job forms and incident reports; and/or communicate routine information regarding daily activities.

DECISION-MAKING and ANALYTICAL SKILLS:

n  May be responsible for actions of others, requiring almost constant decisions affecting students, co-workers, staff, or others in the general public.

n  Adhere to department and college policies, procedures, and practices.

n  Perform manual duties.

n  Perform job duties in a safe and efficient manner.

n  Use proper lifting techniques when moving furniture, tables, chairs, etc.

EQUIPMENT/SOFTWARE:

n  Use office machines such as telephones, fax machines, copiers or calculators.

n  Use Microsoft Outlook

n  Use computers for data entry and/or handle, use hand-held power equipment and/or light machinery.

WORKING CONDITIONS - the following physical conditions and hazards may be encountered in this position:

n  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; chemical hazards; fumes; and dust.

n  The overall environment is normally indoor with movement throughout the assigned work location and with occasional exposure to outside weather conditions.

n  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

n  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell.

n  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

n  The position may also require close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: (A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)

n  Completion of high school/GED

n  One year of related custodial experience.

n  Two years of supervisory experience.

n  Must possess a valid driver’s license
