Role Description

Age UK has a vision of a world in which older people flourish. We aim to improve later life for everyone through our information and advice, campaigns, products, training and research.

We are looking for an enthusiastic intern to complement the work of the Charity Director’s office team by supporting the research/briefing preparation work which the office carries out as well as providing specific research and monitoring work

The team provides a comprehensive range of support to the Charity Director to assist her in all aspects of her work (includes: diary management and stakeholder relations, background research briefings for meetings and speaking functions, speech writing and general administrative support etc). The team also supports the Charity Director in her internal communications work, for example by producing a monthly divisional email bulletin

The intern will gain experience of working in a busy and active Charity Director’s office with the possibility of some shadowing of the Charity Director (eg: accompanying her to external speaking events etc). They will also gain an overview of a high profile division and its workings as well as desk research experience.

However the Development Co-ordinator (Volunteers and Interns) has overall responsibility for the allocation of volunteers/interns within Age UK and for working with you (and the allocated supervisor) to ensure that your experience is a positive and rewarding one.

The role involves:

· Desk research eg: monitoring the work of think tanks on ageing issues

· Media monitoring eg: political magazines

· Supporting diary management and general administrative support work

· Helping to prepare presentations in power-point

· Writing – examples of possible work include: inputting into briefings for meetings/events and assisting with drafting of internal comms (eg: divisional annual report/email bulletin)

Skills required:

· Excellent written and oral communications skills

· Attention to detail and accuracy

· Keen interest in current affairs, ageing and third sector issues

· Good keyboard skills – ability to use Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc

· Good time management skills and the ability to work to deadlines

· The ability to work well as part of a team as well as independently

· Attention to detail and accuracy

· Reliability

· Understanding of Age UK’s policy on equality and valuing diversity, and commitment to working within this policy

· Willingness to undertake induction, adhere to Age UK’s policies and procedures (ie Health & Safety, IT and Confidentiality.)

Duration and Hours to be available:

We are offering a 3 month part time placement, 2 days a week.

For all placements there is a trial period and as a volunteer/intern you can choose to stop volunteering at any time. However, to make this a positive experience for both you and Age UK we hope that you are able to commit for the agreed period.

Expenses

Age UK will pay agreed travel expenses on the production of receipts, as well as provide a daily lunch allowance.

Training

Training and induction will be provided as necessary.
