COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course covers linear equations and inequalities, polynomials, factoring, exponents and radicals, rational expressions and equations and quadratic equations. Polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions and their graphs are introduced.
TEXTBOOK: Beginning & Intermediate Algebra, 3nd edition - Martin-Gay, Prentis Hall Publishers
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students are responsible for any missed class assignments. I do take attendance. Excessive absence (more than 4 missed class periods) will result in a student being dropped from the class. Do not depend on the instructor to drop you especially near the end of the term.
TARDY POLICY: Arriving for class late is disruptive. Please make every effort to arrive on time for class. A student who is more than 5 minutes late will be marked tardy. Three “tardies” equals one missed class.
EARLY OUTS: Leaving class early is disruptive. While it is acceptable to leave class early once or twice during a term, it is not acceptable to do so on a regular basis. The “early out” policy is the same as the tardy policy; 3 early outs equals one missed class.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES IN CLASS: All cellular telephones, pagers and beepers must be turned off or switched to silent or vibrator mode. Electronic entertainment devices are to be turned off and head phones removed. (Note: Students expecting legitimate emergency calls must notify the instructor prior to the beginning of class.)
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: If you are a documented special needs student, please make sure to inform me during the first 2 weeks of class. If you think you may qualify, see Student Services.
CLIMATE OF RESPECT: Students are expected to respect the learning process, the instructor and each other. Engaging in conduct that infringes upon the privacy, right or privileges of others, or disturbs the peace or the orderly process of education is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct. If students persist in any disruptive behavior, they will be asked to leave the class and will be marked absent. Such conduct will result in penalties imposed in this class as well as referral to the Associate Dean of Student Services. Examples of conduct that disturb other students as well as the instructor include making or receiving phone calls in the classroom, refusing to participate in assigned class work and projects, talking to other students while the instructor is conducting class, and sleeping in class. This list is not meant to be exhaustive; these are only some examples of conduct that is unacceptable in the classroom.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Any student caught cheating will receive a grade of NC for the class. Further, it is my policy to refer cheaters to the Associate Dean of Student Services for additional sanctions.
HOMEWORK: Homework is the odd numbered problems in each section. Please make sure that you do your homework on 3 separate days each week. Homework scores are for completion only. You may grade your own homework from answers provided in the book if you wish. A well-established formula for success in a math class states that for every hour your class meets, you should put in 2 hours of work outside of class.
QUIZZES: There will be a quiz every week, including the weeks of exams (not including the final). These quizzes will be cumulative and I will drop the two lowest grades.
GRADING POLICY: This course may be taken for a letter grade (A, B, C, No credit [NC]) or on a credit/no credit CR/NC) basis. There will be 4 exams plus a cumulative final.
Exams 30%
Homework 10%
Quizzes 20% (I will drop the lowest 2)
Attendance 10%
Final Exam 30%
Additionally, you must pass the final exam with a grade of 60 or better to pass the course.
MAIN COURSE OBJECTIVESv  Students will recognize and solve linear, quadratic, and rational equations along with linear systems of equations.
v  Students will rewrite rational, radical, complex and exponential expressions in simplest form.
v  Students will develop the ability to set up and solve a variety of applications including work, mixture, distance, rate-time, and simple geometric.
v  Students will graph linear, exponential and logarithmic equations in two variables.
CALCULATORS
We will look at the TI-83 graphing calculator in this class. You are not required to purchase one. We will occasionally use the classroom sets. You will not be allowed to use a graphing calculator on the exams. If a graphing calculator is the only calculator you own, you will be able to borrow a non-graphing calculator from the instructor for exams.
COURSE CONTENT
We will cover material from the following chapters of the textbook.

EXAMS

I will not be giving any make-ups exams. There will be 4 exams given; all the exams are cumulative. I will average your three highest exams. If you have taken the first 3 exams and are happy with your grade, you may opt out of the 4th exam. Exam 1 will cover all of the review material from Math 100 except factoring. Exam 2 will cover chapters 1 through 5. Exam 3 will cover chapters 1 through 7 and the fourth exam will cover all the material from the entire course. Each of the first 3 exams will be given on Tuesdays; exam 4 will be given on a Thursday. Section 502 students may stay up to an hour late after class to work on exams if they need extra time. Section 504 students may come in up to an hour early to take exams if they think they might need extra time.

MATH 106 LAB

Math 106 is a concurrent lab for Math 120. Students are strongly encouraged to sign up for this lab as it gives them additional opportunities to get help with their intermediate Algebra class. In addition, all exam reviews will happen in Math 106, as there is no time for them in the lecture class.
