Installing Lotus Notes Client on OS X

Version 6.5.4

You need:

· Louts 6.5.4 installer

· User's ID file

· BatChmod

· Know what mail server the user is on.

· Admin rights on the computer

1. Login with an Administrator account.

2. Check to see if Lotus Notes is already installed and remove it if it is. Uninstall by deleting the "Lotus Notes" folder in Applications and these to preference files in ~/Library/Preferences/com.ibm.lotus.Notes.plist and Notes Preferences.

3. Open the Lotus 6.5.4.dmg, Run the Installer. At Welcome screen click Continue.

4. Choose an Install Type: You should see and select Clean Install. Click Continue. If the installer selects Upgrade Existing Install, it may still be on the computer. Find it and delete it. Then start over.

5. Agree to the License Agreement.

6. Select Install Location. Leave it in the Applications directory. For now, leave the Data folder to install in the Lotus Notes folder. Don't check the box.

7. Easy Install, click Contiune

8. Software Installation Complete. Quit.


9. Go to the Applications folder and open the Lotus Notes folder

10. Right click (Control + Click) on the Data folder and select "Create Archive of Data"


11. You should now have a ZIP archive of the Data folder which can be stored here and used again later if needed.

12. Open Batchmod

13. Click on the File button and locate the Lotus Notes folder in the Applications folder. Click Open.


14. Click on the W button twice under Group, click on the W button twice under Everyone. Check the box to "Apply ownership and privileges" to enclosed files and folders. This will give read/write/execute access rights to all the users on the computer and prevents problems with the dictionary and spell check. Click Apply.

15. Click Apply, Yes we are sure. click apply.

16. Give your admin password. Quit Batchmod.

17. Logout as the admin and login as the user.


18. Open the Lotus Notes folder in the Applications folder. Move (don't copy) the Data folder to the user's Documents folder. You'll still have the Data.zip file in the Lotus Notes folder. You should not have a “Data” folder in the Lotus Notes folder now.

19. Rename the Data folder to "Lotus Notes Data" in the users Documents folder.

20. Drag the user's ID file to the Lotus Notes Data folder.

21. Ready to start the configuration! Remember what server the user is on? Check at http://lnotes.spps.org

22. Type in Last name, search, click on their name and then look at the URL.. Write down or remember what server they are on (spps, spps2, etc.)


23. Open Notes from the Lotus Notes folder

24. Click New Setup

25. Locate the Notes Data Folder in the User’s Document folder.

26. Click Next

27. Type in the User’s full name “Firstname Lastname” Add their server name “spps2/spps” or “spps3/spps”

28. Choose to setup a Connection to the local area network (LAN)

29. IF you see this screen you can re-enter the Domino Server name.. Choose TCP/IP and enter the server address.

30. It will then ask for the user’s ID file. It should be located in the new Lotus Notes Data folder in the User’s Documents folder.


31. Enter password. DO NOT CHECK THE BOX "Store password in keychain." Click OK.

32. Make NO selections on this page. Click Next. NOTE: If another screen appears, please call the Help Desk at 603-HELP).


33. Do not believe this message. Click OK.


34. The new look of Lotus 6. For now, just click No thanks, just give me the defaults

35. Go to File > Mobile > Locations. Highlight and click Delete Location for all locations EXCEPT Office (Network).

36. Close User Address Book.

37. Click Yes to delete locations.



38. Go to File>Mobile>Edit Current Locations. Click on Servers tab. Set home/mail server to sppsX


39. . Click on Mail tab. Set Format for messages addressed to internet addresses to Notes Rich Text Format. Click OK.

40. Click on Internet Browser tab. Set Internet Browser to Microsoft Internet Explorer. Click OK.


.OR You can also click Other and Browse to choose Safari or Firefox.


41. Click Advanced tab. Select Yes for time zone settings.

42. Click on Secondary Servers tab. Set Secondary TCP/IP Notes name server to sppsX and secondary TCP/IP Notes host name or address to sppsX.spps.org



43. Click on the MIME Settings Tab. Make sure that The Outbound attachment encoding method is set to Base 64:

and that the Outbound Macintosh attachment conversion is set to AppleDouble (Base 64 only):

44. Click Save & Close.



45. Go to Notes > Preferences > User Preferences. Select Ports. Click on TCP/IP options........... and change to 200 seconds. Click OK.


46. Click on Trace.


47. Check that destination is sppsX/spps. Click Trace

48. Erase the previous destination and type in the web address you entered in step 42. Click Trace. You should get a brief message about a Connection Document being created. When the trace is finished, click done.

49. Click Done when connection message appears.

50. Click OK. If you get this screen, click OK, quit Notes and launch it again.


51. Go to Notes > Preferences > Toolbar Preferences. Click on Customize.

52. Sort Buttons by Description (alpha listing).

53. Highlight Workspace icon and click Add Button.

54. Click Save Toolbar. Click OK.


55. Locate Replication Icon on letf side of screen. (5th icon)


56. Option+Click on Replication Icon Highlight Remove Bookmark


57. Click Yes.

58. Click on Databases icon (now 6th) on left of screen.


59. Open Workspace Tab 1 and drag icon for spps's Address Book to the left and place under the mail icon.


60. Close Databases window.

61. Replace design - for those of you accustomed to having to change the design template, there is no need to do that currently. When this changes, you will be notified.

62. Click on Mail icon. If this window appears, close it.


63. Go to Tools > Preferences.

64. Make certain the user name listed is the Mail owner. If incorrect, use the triangle to access the SPPS address book and select the correct name. There are other advanced settings here, including spell check and signature settings. Click OK.


65. Open the SPPS address book. (If About Public Address Book appears, just close it). Make certain People is selected. Find your name in the list. (Type your last name and click OK.) Highlight your name on the list and double click to open.




66. Click Edit Person.

67. Click Mail tab. Set Format preference for incoming mail to No Preference. Click OK.

68. Click Save and Close.

69. Close the Address Book.



70. Congratulations. You have successfully configured Notes 6 for OS X.



NOTE: Keychain warning - do not ever check to add items to the keychain!



71. To Change the User’s Password: Go to the Notes menu >> Security >> User Security

72. Enter the current password.


73. Click on the Change Password button.

74. Enter the new password twice and Click OK. (Clicking on Generate Password will make Notes create a password for you.)

75. If you password was acceptable, you will see this.
