Assignment:

This assignment is to focus on speeches of description, demonstration or explanation. You will inform your audience on a person, place, event, concept or object. This speech is to convey knowledge and share information. Attention should be given to developing the speech design. Speech designs include spatial, sequential, chronological, categorical, comparative, causational or combined speech designs. The speech is to be 5 to 7 minutes in length, exceeding the time limit will result in a reduction of your composition score by one full grade.

Requirements

1. You are required to do research on this project. Three sources must be quoted in your speech and cited in your formal outline. Only one of the three may be from the internet, all other references are to be of another source.

2. Outlines are due two class dates before your assigned speech date. A working outline or formal outline will be accepted for this review. Typed outlines are encouraged, if the information is not legible, it will impact the final speech grade. The outline must include a thesis, preview, introduction, main points, summary/conclusion and transitional statements. A formal final outline, with a work cited page, is due on the day of your speech. It must be typed in 12-point size. It is your responsibility to provide the instructor with your outline prior to giving your speech. The work cited references must be in MLA style.

3. Assigned speech dates are noted on the class syllabus. Special Note: The number you randomly drew on the first day of class corresponds with your assigned speech date. Your speech is due on the date noted on the syllabus.

4. A visual aid that supports your informative presentation is required. Facts, statistics, or testimonies are encouraged.

5. Type of Delivery – Extemporaneous -- Do not read your speech.

Examples of the Assignment:

Think about something you want to learn or know more about. Start brainstorming your topic. Develop a specific purpose statement. Specific Purpose: To inform the audience on. . . Examples: The History of Greek columns, the location of Queen Eleanor’s estates, the three ways you can see Alaska, what is the Bakersfield Business Conference or what is the role of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Objectives of the Assignment:

To understand and apply the speech design principles introduced in Osborn, Michael and Osborn, S. (2003) Public Speaking 7th Edition. Boston. Special emphasizes should be given to speech structure and composition.

To keep your audience engaged and hold their interest. Use eye contact with your audience.

To effectively use language – clarity, accuracy and effectiveness.

To continue to apply breathing and visualization techniques to help control your public speaking apprehension.

To deliver the speech extemporaneously and with confidence. Remember to practice, practice, practice.
