MMS Directors meeting --> August 23. “Dear Mr. Cole, At our last MMS Board of Directors meeting (Tuesday, Aug. 23) we approved your request to purchase a utility trailer for the approximate sum of $221. This doesn't include approximately $65 for registration, etc. -- the sum of which was also approved.”

The MMS trea$ury is “somewhat adequate” for the time-being. The proceeds from the Monument Downhill were $221. The Magnet Run was cancelled (orig. sched’d for Oct. 15). The MMS “Timing Crew” has a few events to time, including the GJ P&R “Jingle Bell Jog” on Dec. 17. (Date could be Dec. 10). If you haven’t already volunteered – OUR CLUB stands to have ~ $750 (you read it right, ¾ of $1k !) donated by the folks who put on the Oct. 1 “Tour of the Moon” bicycle tour – as the MMS is the “SAG WAGON” crew for the cycling event. We considered the future of the MMS Trail-Race Series. Maybe include Turkey Flats?

OCTOBER, NOVEMBER … C A L E N D A R

Note: all phone numbers “970” unless indicated otherwise

Oct. 1. Sat. 10 a.m., SJMR’s annual NORTH RIM (Black Canyon) 20k and 8k. Check SJMR’s website AND Facebook! Sincerely, folks, this is an adventure (well, like most our runs, but) – GETTING THERE is a mini-road-trip, in that this is the not-so-frequently-visited NORTH Rim. Two distances to choose from: 20k (12+ miles) or 8k (5 miles). All of the 8k and most the 20 “skirt” the actual rim of the canyon. Make sure your non-participant companions bring their cameras! The editor’s spouse brought her mountain bike (dirt/gravel road) the last two times, and rode the course, getting a workout, too.

Oct. 1, Glenwood Canyon Shuffle Races – Half-M or 5k. Look for it at www.active.com

October 8, Sat. 8 a.m.: MMS has another (trail) work day scheduled with BLM to celebrate National Park Lands Day (September 24th) on October 8th. The BLM needed to change the time of the Striders trail work day on October 8th. It will start at 8:00am and wrap up around 1:00pm. This will occur at the west-most Kokopelli parking lot west of the Mack exit (Troy Built lot). There will likely be a longish hike to some of the work sites. The work session should end around 2pm. We’ll have a pot luck lunch at the trail head afterwards please bring a dish to share. Items to bring: Work Gloves, sturdy shoes - hiking/work boots if possible, long pants, sunglasses/eye protection, hat, water and snacks, appropriate extra clothing for the weather, backpack (recommended if you want to tote your water, snacks, and extra gear to the work site).

Contact Corey Hinman 707-933-6328 or with any questions.

Saturday, October 8, 9 AM, Vivace 5K (hosted by the Palisade High School Band)

October 9, Sunday, 8:30 a.m.: RUN TO WHITEWATER ! This point-to-point self-supported (adventure) run goes 18 miles from the Little Park/Bangs Canyon Parking lot (up Little Park Road) along the Tabeguache Trail to where the trail crosses Highway 141 just west of Whitewater. Good “conditioner” for Rimrock! Conrad, 245-4243 Mr. Cole says: “Like last few years, the run starts at 8:30am at the Bang's Canyon parking lot. I GPS'd it last year to be 17.8 miles. Will have beer and pizza at the end. $5 sugg donation to help with refreshments. No biggie if you left the money at home. A small tribe of slow runners will start 1 hour early.
If you are slow, join in with the early group.”

October 23, Sat., 8:30 a.m. THE OTHER HALF, HALF-MARATHON, http:www.moabhalfmarathon.org

This Moab area half-marathon, unlike the spring edition, is relatively easy (so far) to register for. Entry fees go up if you haven’t paid already. Extremely scenic, usually pleasant weather, hundreds of your friends will be there. And … you can sign up for the Dec. 3 WinterSun 10K at the same time. Dare we say "party bus!"?

October 25, Tuesday, 7 p.m. monthly MMS Directors (& anyone else who shows up!) meeting. Call 270-0109 for location & etc.

Oct. 29, Sat. 9 a.m. Holy Family Spooktacular 5k, 7th & H Road. Kathy: 201-3928

Nov. 5, Sat., 8 a.m. if you’re planning on running the RIMROCK MARATHON, you’re hopefully in shape NOW (start ramping up!) www.rimrockmarathon.com Entry fee increases with time. TEAMS! The number of teams has been raised to 50! So consider either an uphill ½ M (you tag your partner @ the ½-way point), or a downhill 1/2M. Entries for teams are higher, but less per runner than for individual competitors.

Also Nov. 5: It’s also the time of year for a shorter race (than the “big M”). Time to start registering and training for our 6th Annual Panda Waddle 5k. Our race this year will be held Saturday at 10:00 am at Longs Park. Registration is $20.00 per person and you will once again get a long sleeve tech shirt if you register by October 21st. There is a family discount. You can turn your registration forms in to Pear Park Elementary or register online at http://www.active.com/grand-junction-co/running/distance-running-races/panda-waddle-5k-2016 . Can’t wait to see you all in November. Thanks, Nick Moseley

The Peach Festival 5K was held on 8/20/16 at 8 AM. 37 runners pre-registered for the event. 10 more registered on race day. The weather was perfect for the event. The race was held on the riverfront trail and went for 1.55 miles before turning around. Unlike previous Peach Festival races, NOBODY was lost! Everyone ran the correct course. The event winner was Cheryl Stahly in 20:26. She beat the men's winner of Kirk Hallam who finished in 21:18. The author finished in 7th in 23:04 with his 3rd race this year within 5 seconds of the 23 minute barrier. The race generated over $2000 for books for Mt. Garfield Middle School. This race was co-sponsored by the middle school and Palisade Living Center. It was huge success and well done for a first time event. This will become a yearly event, and I will make sure there are cups for the water at the end next year. Thanks to everyone for all their efforts!
