The New York City Department of Education releases two school quality reports to help parents evaluate New York City public schools:
· The School Quality Snapshot is designed specifically for parents and provides information about the quality of a school by taking a balanced look at the school’s practices, learning environment, and performance. The report is based on multiple measures, including a review by an experienced educator, survey responses of students, teachers and parents, and a variety of achievement and progress measures.
· The School Quality Guide provides more detailed information about each school, including multiple years of data so that school’s progress over time can be more easily tracked.
In addition, data from the School Quality Reports will be included on the School Performance Dashboard, a DOE interactive data tool. Using drop-down menus to select particular metrics and comparisons with color coding and data visualization, user can identify and analyze trends, patterns, and strengths and areas of improvement for schools. For the complete reports, please visit our school website at www.schools.nyc.gov.
Preparing every student to succeed after high school remains one of WHSAD Administration’s top priorities. When there is a joint effort between school and home to promote continued education after high school graduation, students are more likely to make plans for and extend education past the high school level. For the next three months, we are planning a series of workshops to promote parent’s role in maintaining high expectations for their children. The first workshop on “How to Stand Out- College Classes, A.P. Classes, Internships, and Advance Regents” will be on Thursday, December 15th at 7:00 P.M. Save the date!
Parent involvement can be a strong and positive influence on a student’s academic achievement. Being an informed parent is key to staying in the loop and keeping an open line of communication with their teenagers as they make post-secondary plans. It is never too soon or too late to start the conversation about planning for the future and the possibilities!
