Catalog description:

An introduction to Great Basin College and its programs and services; an introduction to essential aspects of the college experience in order to promote student success. (No prerequisites) .5 credits.

Course Goal:

The goal of INT 100 is to introduce students to Great Basin College and its programs and services so that they will achieve their educational goals. INT 100 also serves as a way to provide ongoing support by building community and culture among students.

Method of Instruction:

Information will be presented in this orientation online.

Grading: Grading will be by the Pass/Withdraw system.

To pass the class, students must complete all assigned tasks. These include:

Ø  Being advised by a GBC advisor

Ø  Completing assigned exercises

Ø  Completing all placement tests (for ENG/MATH students)

Students will receive a “W” and will have to repeat this course if all materials are not turned in online, on time.

Student Outcomes / Measurements
1. Student will become familiar with navigating MYGBC. / Logging in to MYGBC and verifying personal information and who their program faculty advisor is.
2. Student will meet with an advisor. / Confirmation email will be sent by advisor confirming advisement.
3. Student will become familiar with GBC courses and programs. / Completion of Program Requirement assignment.
4. Student will become familiar with Degree Audit Report / Completion of Degree Audit Report assignment.
5. Student will learn to access student support services. / Complete and submit application for library card and view library website, view Academic Success Center (ASC) website and view GBC computer lab website.
6. Student will become familiar with Canvas Instructure. / Completion of course.
7. Student will be introduced to study skill strategies like note-taking and time management skills. / Completion of The Ten Study Habits of Successful Students assignment.
8. Student will learn about their rights and responsibilities. / Completion of Students Rights and Responsibilities assignment.
9. Students will be familiar with placement test scores, such as the ACT, SAT or Accuplacer. / Student will locate test scores in PeopleSoft or will have taken the Accuplacer test prior to end of class.

This course is required of all first-time students taking 12 or more credits. It is also a graduation requirement for all Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees for students entering under the fall 2000 catalog and thereafter. Part-time students are not required to take this course their first semester of enrollment, but they are encouraged to take it as soon as possible; it is required for graduation.

Logging In to GBC Campus Computers

Every student has an individual login for access to GBC computers.

User Name
Your user name for GBC lab and classroom computers is your 10-digit student ID (the same one you use for the MyGBC Self-Service Center)
Initial Password
·  The first three letters of your last name, with the first capitalized, followed by
·  The first three letters of your first name, with the first capitalized, followed by
·  The last four digits of your 10-digit student ID
For example, if your name is Megan Reed, and your student ID is 4000123988, then your initial password is ReeMeg3998
Important: Change your password within the first six uses or you will need to appear in person at the Helpdesk to have your password reset.
How to Change Your Password
·  Go to http://arms.elko.gbcnv.edu
·  The first time you visit, you will have to set two challenge questions/answers. Doing so will allow you to change your password.
Network and Groupwise Password Rules
Passwords must be:
·  A minimum of 8 characters long, with
·  at least one upper case letter and
·  at least one lower case letter and
·  at least one numeral
Student passwords will expire after 120 days and will need to be reset through the ARMS link above. You will receive a warning at login when your password is about to expire. Passwords cannot be repeated until after 8 passwords.
