Kim Foster at Sop Swem & Sherrie

Hi Everyone,

We are nearing the new season, which is going to be very exciting for us, seeing that the Nationals are to be held in Germiston in March 2005. We are hopefully going to have a HUGE team participating, old and new members. We are going to do our absolute best to take the cup back from Cape Town Masters. Talking about the old members, we don’t mean in age, just the ones that used swim Masters and have stopped for different reasons. We miss them. Lets see if we can get them back in the water for this season!

Firstly, we would like to congratulate all our swimmers for their great performances at the Masters World Champs in Riccione, Italy. We are very proud of you all. Especially Edith Otterman, who came back with nothing less than a WORLD RECORD. Also to Joanne Cowell for her great times achieved at the Prestige Gala held in Durban in July.

We had a wonderful turn-out at our mid-year Bring and Braai at Rietvlei Dam. It was so nice to see all the ‘old’ friends and faces once again, as you can see from the following photos!

Marieke, Danie and Shaun

SUBS: So far we had a really good response from our members, paying before the end of July, and managed to send off 56 renewals for the new season down to SAMS. These will be put into lucky cash prize draw for early renewals. The members that still have to renew, please do so as soon as possible. The cut-off date will be 10th September, 2004. It all has to be down in Cape Town by 30th September, and Derek still has to compile it all and collect all the monies etc before then. Please, Please……….. New members may join anytime, but must be a paid up member to be able to swim in any Masters Galas. The Coelacanth 1500 is an exception. You may bring anyone even if they are not Master member, get them keen, to meet all of us and we are sure they will sign up as a Coelacanth!! They will be hooked!!

Please fax your confirmation of payment to Ann for subs that are due.

THOUGHTS:

Our best wishes to Gerrie Dorlas who had yet another back operation. He says it was the worst one ever! He doesn’t think he will be able to swim again but he will definitely be beside the pool at galas to cheer Sandy and us all on. Gerrie we hope you are not in too much pain. Get better soon. Also to Ted and V Beukes who are not 100 %. Hope you get well soon. Ralph, we hope to see you again soon, even if it is only to cruise along!! We know that your back is also giving you a pain … in more ways than one.

A big thank you to those members and friends that went to support Alec Hack at Maryllia’s funeral. She will be greatly missed by all.

I am so sad to hear that maybe Barbara and Roland will be leaving us to join Meryl and Daryl in Aussie. It is great news to know that they have been accepted for their sakes, but we will really miss them. Barbara has still to confirm……….

You want to know what happened at the Sop, Swem and Sherrie ?

Anton picked us up at 8.30 and we all piled in the Rooi Volksie Bus…. Having a great time, coffee, croissants, samies, boerie sticks, boiled eggs, champayne and orange juice and all…… Tony D’Almeida, Marieke, Terry Downes and Kim, Derek and myself and Maryanne and our driver Anton. We joked and chatted and phoned Charlie Merritt and sang Happy Birthday at the top of our voices..just then, booofff, a cloud of smoke came out the back of our Rooi Volksie…..

The oil button was beeping, we were in trouble…… Lucky for us it was about 2 ks away from the Engen at Kroonvaal, so we pulled in there only to find out at a later stage the rings were kaput….now what do we do, go back or forward or maak a plan…. Anton made a plan, and 3 hours later after coffee and rugby at the Wimpy, lying in the sun on the lawn with all our baggage, we finally went forward to Bloem in two hired cars. The Freestaters are the best…..they held the gala back so that we would be in time for 3.30pm, which we were….our teamates, Carola, Kobus, Soretha, Charlie, Annamarie and Edith all waiting to welcome us. We had a wonderful gala and of course Coelacanths won. The Freestaters were wonderful hosts, food, sop and plenty of sherry, prizes for all, and then they still gave us a party, which of course we took over, once again……. Proof of all our happenings!!

We then received a call from Ann Hanson that they also packed up and had to call the AA but luckily they were already in Bloem…..

‘n boer maak ‘n plan

Waiting for the hired cars to arrive…. Thanks to Anton se plan…….

By the way it was all Tony’s fault……. He is a bad omen……remember East London

When he and Owen broke down on the way to Champs ……

Keep well , see you all soon and keep swimming!!

Joyce.

p.s. We need all Id No.s Please fax or phone or Email to us urgent for Swim South Africas files. Thanks
