Essay and Oral Presentation guidelines

ESSAY:

·  Title page/Cover sheet; Must include:

o  Title (famous person’s name)

o  Your name

o  Your class/Block

o  Date

·  At least 5 paragraph report, written in your own words

o  Use the outline for help, explain to me about who your person is!

o  Paragraphs include intro sentence, 2-3 details and concluding sentence

o  All research criteria is included (information from mini outline)

o  Must be written in blue or black ink or pencil

o  May be typed

o  If typed: double spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman or Ariel font

o  No extra spaces between paragraphs; only hit return/enter once

·  Bibliography

o  Must include 3 sources; No Wikipedia

o  Sources are in ABC order

o  Sources are listed like in examples provided on next page

·  Report is edited and neat

·  Report is assembled (neatly stapled or held together with a report cover) in the order listed above

ORAL PRESENTATION:

·  Speech note cards (A mini version of your report)

·  2-3 minutes long

·  Make eye contact, have good volume and pace

·  Stand straight and tall with your hands and arms relaxed.

·  Include info from each section/paragraph in your oral speech

·  Prepare/Practice – rehearse your speech several times, you shouldn’t have to look at your note cards too often because you have practiced it so many times!

·  Speak clearly and distinctly

·  Don’t mispronounce words (this is why you PRACTICE FIRST!)

·  Use expression and enthusiasm to make your presentation interesting and engaging

·  “My famous person is….”

Use your rubrics to understand what to include to get all possible points for your essay, project and oral presentation!

Research Mini-Outline

Paragraph 1 – INTRO/CHILDHOOD

·  Name of person

·  What is your person most famous for or greatest accomplishment? (Do NOT go into DETAIL here, just give us a lead about what you will talk about later)

·  When was your person born?

·  Where was your person born?

·  Where did your person grow up?

·  Did anything eventful occur during your person’s childhood?

·  Did your person go to school? Education?

Paragraph 2 - FAMILY

·  Who were your person’s parents?

·  Did your person grow up with his/her parents?

·  Did your person have any brothers or sisters?

·  Are there any other family members that influenced your person?

·  What type of relationship did your person have with his/her family?

·  What type of home life did your person have

·  Was your person married? If yes, did the spouse play a major role in their life?

Paragraph 3 –ACCOMPLISHMENTS (Biggest paragraph; could be broken into 2 paragraphs)

·  Did your person have any particular strength?

·  How did they become famous?

·  Give us details here about how and why your person is famous?

·  What events led to their fame?

·  Did your person do anything that changed the course of history or influenced it in any way?

·  Did your person win any awards?

·  Did your person do anything great that other people talked about? For example, write a book?

·  Are there any significant events/people that inspired your person?

·  What was happening in history at the time they were famous?

·  What impact did they have on America or other historical figures?

·  How are they remembered today?

Paragraph 4 - PROBLEMS / OBSTACLES

·  Did your person face any personal challenges during his/her life?

·  How did your person respond to these problems?

·  Was anyone else involved in these issues?

·  Was there an end to the problems that your person faced?

·  Did this person make any major mistakes or bad decisions? If so, what were they?

·  Was your person a "hero?" Why? Why not? How is a hero different from a celebrity? Or was your person someone that history looks down upon.

Paragraph 5 – END OF LIFE / CONCLUSION / REFLECTION

·  How and when did this person die?

·  Is there a significant day or place surrounding this person’s death?

·  Is this person still alive? What are they doing now?

·  How might the world be different without their contribution

·  Personal reflection

·  Your opinion, why do you think this?

·  Why and do you think all people feel the same as you?

·  How might the world be different without their contribution?

·  Famous quote from this person

The questions and ideas above are guidelines; all information is not required. They may work with your person, but they may not, you might not be able to find some of the information, and that is okay.

Helpful Hints:

·  We will go over all these notes in class and how to best start your research; We will discuss how to take notes in class and will give some research time throughout the timeline

·  You should compile notes/notecards on each paragraph/section; Write all research on separate note cards/paper for each section or paragraph.

·  Put research/notes in chronological order for each section; then write it below

·  Use this planner to help you organize your notes before you write the rough draft.
