HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT PROJECT

Purpose:

The purpose of this project is to provide you with a “hands on” experience in collecting information, analyzing information, and developing recommendations for improvement of human resource management systems. Through this experience, you should learn to better recognize various elements in the design and implementation of effective (or not-so effective) HR systems, and be familiar enough with the design of effective HR systems to make recommendations for change. In addition, you will be developing your critical thinking and analysis skills.

Project Requirements:

1. You will divide into teams

2. Team A Team B

Selection system Training and development systems

Performance appraisal Compensation system

system

3. For each team, there are two specified HR systems areas (see #2 above). Your team is to gather data from a “real live” organization of your choosing, one to which a team member has access. If at all possible, select an organization that may not have a well defined or ‘state of the art’ HR system. What type of data are you gathering? a) find out how the system is designed; b) how does it work? Does the organization have a policy or specific procedures for the system? If so, what are they?; c) how are decisions made in each procedural step or phase of the system? These are just a few of the types of questions you need to address.

4. Analyze the data you have collected. What kind of analysis? For example, how does this system compare to your knowledge of effectively designed and implemented HR practices; is the system designed and implemented in such a way that it is legally defensible . This latter question requires you to be very familiar with EEO law and the respective legal implications for the HR areas you are analyzing.

4. What specific recommendations would you make to improve the system—either in its design and/or in its implementation? As part of your recommendations, you are required to justify (with facts, not opinions) your recommendations accordingly.

Since several of these topics will not be addressed fully in class until later in the semester, your team may wish to read ahead on the specific chapters related to your assigned HR areas. This does not prevent you, however, from start ing early to gather the information you will need in order to analyze the data later. This project requires time and effort so starting as soon as possible will enable you to develop a high quality presentation at the end of the semester.
