How to use PSPICE – Getting Started – Placing Parts
1) From the start menu: Programs -> Cadence SPB 16.01 -> Design Entry CIS
2) From the Pop-up Menu select: Allegro PCB Design CIS L; click <OK>
3) At this point you will see a large window. From the toolbar at the top select: File->New->Project
4) You will see the New Project pop-up menu (shown below on the left).
a) Enter a name for your schematic. Here I have created a project called sim.
b) Make sure that the Analog or Mixed A/D radio button is selected (with the school version this is NOT the default). If you do not do this you cannot simulate.
c) Click <Browse> to define the path where you want your file to be saved; click <OK>
5) You will then see the Select Directory pop-up menu on the right
a) Select the H-drive at the bottom
b) Select your class folder. Here I have selected zece207140. (You can also create a subdirectory from here to better organize your work.)
c) In the Select Directory pop-up menu click <OK> to close it
d) In the New Project pop-up menu click <OK>
6) You will see the Create PSpice Project pop-up menu:
a) Select : Create blank project
b) Click <OK>
You may need to resize your schematic window. You are now ready to add parts.
Adding Parts
7) First click your mouse in the schematic window to activate the toolbars
8) To place a part click hotkey p or from the Menu Place->Part - you may have to wait
When you first launch PSpice (from school) the libraries containing the parts may not be loaded. If this is the case you will need to add them. If the libraries have been loaded skip the Adding Libraries section that follows
Adding Libraries
9) In the Place Part menu (shown below on the left) click <Add Library>
10) You will see the Browse File pop-up menu (shown below on the right). The path of the library files you need to add is: C: Cadence->PSD_16.01->tools->capture->library->pspice
a) To select all the libraries at once: click your mouse in the Browse File pop-up menu in the position indicated below and then click <ctrl> a to select all
b) Click <Open> to close the Browse File window
Returning to adding parts
The Place Part Menu should appear as shown below with all the libraries loaded. In the “part list” the part is listed along with the library that it belongs to. It is important to add the part from the correct library. Otherwise it may not function as you intend.
11) Enter the Part r
As you can see below there are multiple parts that are called R, and each is in a different library.
12) Select the part r from the library analog
13) Click <OK>
Note: Sometimes you will see a pop-up menu indicated that the part is not in the design cache. If you see this menu, click <yes>.
14) Click your mouse to position and place the resistor on the schematic.
15) You will continue to be able to place parts that are of the type that you selected. Click <esc> to end the place parts command.
