Description:

7th Grade Science is a multi-disciplinary level of Science. During this year we will be covering a variety of areas within the overarching subject of Science. This year is also the year we will be introducing the new Science standards known as NGSS. With the creation of the new Science standards, topics have been rearranged throughout the grade levels. So what you thought was taught in 7th grade before may have been moved. These new standards are designed to help students think for critically, solve problems using knowledge gained and be able to communicate their findings with the world around them through technology and other means.

Course Standards:

Students will understand

·  Science and Engineering are interrelated and influence each other

·  How to ask questions based on observation, models, unexpected results and/or to seek more information

·  How to identify a problem and create a solution for it using the information they already know

·  How to design models to create explanations and show relationship

·  How to plan and carry out investigations that use multiple variables and give evidence to support claims

·  How to analyze and interpret data and how Math and Science are interrelated.

·  How to communicate their findings and gather evidence to support their findings

Textbook:

Holt Science. Keep in mind though we rarely use the textbook but instead supplement with a variety of sources your child will have full access to. Please check the website and your child’s Science journal and folder for additional materials provided to aide them in their learning.

Materials:

Composition Notebook

Folder

Pencil

Grading:

Students will be given report cards three times a year. The last report card of the year will be mailed. Progress reports are sent home during the middle of each grading period. All incomplete grades must be made up by the following midterm or the grade will be changed to failing (F).

The following grade scale is used to convert percentage grades to letter grades:

·  A+ 99% or higher C 76% - 81%

·  A 95% - 98% C- 73% - 75%

·  A- 93% - 94% D+ 70% - 72%

·  B+ 90% - 92% D 67% - 69%

·  B 87% - 89% D- 65% - 66%

·  B- 85% - 86% F 64% or lower

·  C+ 84%- 82%

Retakes:

If a student has completed all homework assignments during the unit and has successfully completed the additional assigned learning tasks in the identified areas of weakness, he/she may retake an assessment over those specific learning targets not yet mastered.

No bonus points or extra credit assignments will be offered or included in the grade. If the student fails to complete and submit assignments as required and to teacher/school expectations, consequences such as teacher detention, teacher docs, etc. will be issued.

Participation & Attendance:

Students are expected to actively participate and attend class every day. If a student must be absent the student is responsible for gathering the missed material and make the work up in the allowed amount of time.

General Outline (subject to change):

Unit / Descriptions
Chemistry / Chemical/Physical Changes, Law of Conservation of Mass, Thermal Energy
