HIGH SCHOOL SPECIALTY PROGRAMS

Agriculture: (Brentsville High School)

Offers a hands-on curriculum where students develop the necessary knowledge for careers in landscape design, greenhouse and nursery production, and turf management.

Advanced Placement Scholars: (Patriot High School or Woodbridge High School)

Provides instruction in pre-college and college level courses with a collegial learning environment and rigorous academic focus.

Automotive Technology: (Hylton High School or Osbourn Park High School)

Designed to help students prepare for entry-level work in the autotechnology field and/or to continue his/her education in a related occupation.

Biomedical Science: Project Lead the Way: (Osbourn Park High School)

Rigorous four-course biomedical science sequence allows students to investigate the roles of biomedical professionals. Students will study concepts of human medicine, physiology, genetics, microbiology, and public health.

The Biotechnology Center: (Osbourn Park High School)

Enriched and challenging science curriculum with strong emphasis on technology, environmental, and biological sciences.

Cabinetmaking: (Hylton High School)

Students learn workshop and tool safety and employability skills to prepare them for the construction trade of cabinet making.

The Cambridge Programme Program: (Potomac High School or Brentsville High School)

International pre-university curriculum that focuses on an investigative approach to learning, project work, and individual research.

Center for Environmental and Natural Science: (Freedom High School)

Laboratory and field investigation components. Integrates environment and other educational disciplines.

Center for Fine and Performing Arts: (Colgan High School)

Trains young artists for professions in fine and performing arts. Includes opportunities in creative writing, visual arts, instrumental and vocal music, theater, dance, and music production.

Center for Information Technology: (Forest Park High School and Battlefield High School)

Programs including graphics and multimedia, hardware and networking, and math and computer programming.

Center for International Studies and Languages: (Hylton High School)

Emphasizes global awareness, cultures and languages, information and communication, and political systems.

Cyber Security: (Potomac High School)

Students will explore theory and hands on practices: critical infrastructure security systems and devices; intelligent computing and controlling devices and systems security; business information and technology network security systems and techniques; network security systems: and ethical hacking roles and tools.

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC): (Northern Virginia Community College Program/Dual Enrollment/Unique Transfer Program)

This program will prepare students for a career in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. Students take college course work at NVCC's Woodbridge campus each day as well as their high school.

International Baccalaureate Programme: (Gar-Field High School or Stonewall Jackson High School)

Rigorous four-year academic program authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization.

The Pre-Governor’s School @ Osbourne Park: (Osbourne Park High School)

A preparatory program that emphasizes Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) acceleration. Students have the opportunity to prepare for success at The Governor's School @ Innovation Park should they gain entry during eleventh and twelfth grade years.

Project Lead the Way: (Woodbridge High School)

Advanced math and science program to prepare students to enter the field of engineering.

Television Production: (Hylton High School)

Focuses on the applications of broadcast productions.

Welding: (Potomac HS)

Teaches students the welding process.

Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Programs:

All programs designed to teach leadership, self-discipline, citizenship and organizational skills.

Ä Brentsville High School students must apply to Stonewall Jackson High School

Ä Colgan High School students must apply for admittance to the JROTC program at Osbourn Park High School.


It is HIGHLY recommended that students/parents who are interested in applying to specialty programs attend the general information meeting AND the individual program meetings.

Dates for the individual program meetings can be found on the high school websites or on the Specialty School Website (PWCS website à Parents àAcademic Programs à Specialty Programs). An informational brochure and the electronic application will be on this website.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

ALL students interested in specialty programs MUST complete and submit an on-line application by the deadline. Applications are also required for students residing within the high school boundary.

If a transfer student withdraws or is dismissed from a specialty program, the student must return to his/her school base. ALL students will fill out a high school class schedule form in January/ February for his/her base school. Students accepted by specialty programs will be notified in the spring and will then complete another class schedule for the program they are accepted into.
