CHAPTER DIRECTOR THOUGHTS

Mike S. gave a good talk on Bike Safety. Now I don’t want to steal any of Mike’s Thunder but I will tell you that just because you have a green light there is no guarantee that you are going to make it through the intersection. I am so glad that I did not have the bike and was even gladder that the car that nailed me was a smaller car (Honda Accord) when another driver went through a red light and hit me on the driver’s side of the vehicle I was driving. I am doing fine after the accident, however the Trailblazer is history. Glad that the car that had me in the cross hairs was a smaller car.

CHAPTER NEWS

The Chapter would like to say a special THANK YOU to ROGER & JOYCE TACEY for taking the time out of their schedules to host and line up a great meal and door prizes for our March gathering. This was a great night for fine food and excellent fellowship. I felt “WOWED”. I felt that the young ladies that cooked, brought food to the tables, and washed the dirty dishes all did a

fine, fine job. I felt that they were very mannerly, and made us all feel very welcome. I am sure that was a lot of work for them but they all looked like they truly enjoyed doing it.
We had 43 members on hand and I heard nothing but good reviews on the evening. The Chapter had two visitors, Dan & Darlene Hoffer, who came with Kevin and Joan Sonnichsen. We hope to see them again and again.
Our new Chapter Couple of the Year (COY) was announced. Thanks to everyone for their nominations as it sure made the job easier. Our new COUPLE OF THE YEAR is GARY and CINDI UMBERGER. Please take the time to congratulate them.
Lance gave a talk on the fast approaching District Rally. Plans are being put together on the weekend of March 26th and 27th.
Again I hope to see you all at the next gathering. Be sure to bring your Passports. You fill in the event and I’ll sign them. Bring them with you to every GWRRA Event that you attend. An event could be group ride with an officer present, a Highway cleaning a ditch walk, Wing Ding, Chapter meeting etc.

RIDER EDUCATION

It’s a winter wonderland as we look out our window this morning. We checked the calendar and yes it is the end of March so we know that spring is here and with it the start of the “motorcycle-riding season”. After a long hard winter we are ready to ride but it has been several months since drivers have been used to seeing us out there. We need to get them to notice us again so consider “The Power of the Wave” written by Joe and Judy Prillo our Region E Rider Educators.

First let’s agree that a friendly WAVE is the same thing as saying Hello or like sharing a smile. When out riding, a friendly wave to other motorcycles is letting them know that we both enjoy the same thing. When we extend a friendly wave to other road users, including pedestrians, it makes them notice us. That is exactly what we want, to SEE and be SEEN. It also lets the recipients of our WAVE know that we are a friendly group and enjoy people. A wave to a child is worth gold. They will notice, wave back, tell their parents and now, the adults are aware of our presence. We have been SEEN.

Don’t be discouraged if there is not always a return wave each time. The wave may be observed by others which means we have been SEEN. Sharing a wave is like sharing a smile at a distance. It will let others know that we are approachable and may be the start of conversations everywhere we go. You never know, you may meet the same person you waved to at your next stop.

The simple WAVE can be our first step to be noticed on the roadway. Join us and start waving even more than you do now. Not only will you see a lot of people smiling at you, the WAVE will put you and your co-rider in very happy frame of mind. Try it, you may like it.

The 7th Annual GWRRA Iowa District Safety Weekend will be held in Ankenny, IA from May 6 to 8th. There will be an Experienced Riding Course (One-up and Two-up), Trike Riding Course (One-up and Two-up) and Advanced Riding Course (one-up) first time rider. The courses will be held at the Des Moines Area Community College. You can download the registration information at: http://www.gwrra-iowa.us/RED/Safe_11Flyer.pdf.
