FRENCH IMMERSION COURSE OUTLINES – HIGH SCHOOL

The FRENCH IMMERSION HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM mandates successful completion of immersion classes until grade 8 in one of the two French Immersion schools of PGCPS. All courses provide a mono-lingual learning environment.

FR 5 IMM Literature:

Students explore both classical and non-traditional literature from France and the francophone world. Two new literary units from amongst the diverse world of francophone cultures are presented each quarter for students to analyze, discuss critically with appreciation of similarities and differences. A gamut of current reading strategies is used for group and individual presentations and projects. A wide range of grammatical structures is studied.

FR 5 IMM Life and Civilization:

A thematic approach characterizes this course based on the francophone world, teenagers and social issues, human relations, study of the environment and the new world order. Authentic material, both written and electronic, is exploited by students as they learn to research and deliver presentations detailing understanding of the various issues related to the themes studied. The study of correct grammar is reinforced throughout the course.

FR 6 IMM Francophone Societies:

Linguistic skills are developed through the study of thought and cultural practices from amongst the French speaking world. Each unit studied comprises an oral component (speaking, debating), a writing component as well as a special interest segment demonstrating the requisite French language skills needed to interpret, analyze and recognize the literary, sociological and cultural identities of francophone societies

FR 7 IMM COM LIT and Cultures in Francophone Societies:

Students read and analyze works by various authors so as to examine connections which exist within the diversity of the French speaking world.

Study of correct grammatical functions are reinforced through oral and written work, group discussion. Students learn to revise written communications for clarity and coherence, improve research techniques, state reasoned opinions on subjects of fairly complex social and cultural issues.

FR 8 IMM Perspectives on Francophone issues 1:

This course presents an integrated approach to the study of French language and literature based the human aspects of culture. The material used, both in printed and the electronic forms, is organized around a number of themes of permanent relevance such as Education, the Family, Politics, the Arts, Communications and the concept of Globalization in the contemporary world scene. Selections are made for their intrinsic cultural value and may include newspaper and magazine articles, essays, literary works, cartoons, interviews etc.

FR IMM Perspectives on Francophone issues 2:

Students perfect their analytical skills in communicating in the French language. They are taught to use French appropriately based on a various cultural and social contexts, understand ideas and how they are organized in order to communicate them appropriately. Students develop an understanding of and sensitivity to the subtleties of the French language through material that is challenging both linguistically and in its context.
