Forestry Technician (Harvest Inspector)

The Umpqua National Forest may be filling several Forestry Technician (Harvest Inspector) positions. The target grade of these positions would be a GS-462-04, or 05 with a duty station at the North Umpqua RD located in Glide, Oregon. The positions are 6 month seasonal (1039 Standard PD) intended to work from approximately May – October.

The Position:

Introductory Statement: This is a standard forestry technician position description intended for use in the USDA Forest Service. This position is established on a Forest Service unit to perform technical duties in support of the Timber Sale Administration/Implementation Department and will serve as an assistant to the Umpqua Timber Sale Adminstrators. Harvest Inspector duties will include: approving skid road/skyline corridor locations, monitoring fire safety requirements, checking silviculture utilization, ensuring log truck accountability, inspecting harvest slash preparation, erosion control compliance, and cleaning of equipment. The position also potentially performs other forestry technician duties in support of timber sale implementation such as: harvest unit layout, boundary tagging, and timber cruising. The incumbent must be able to follow specific instructions and work both independently and with others. The work at all levels is physically demanding and endures environmental exposure over difficult terrain. All positions are supervised by the Umpqua Forest Service Representative. There is no government housing available for these positions.

ABOUT THE UMPQUA NATIONAL FOREST…

The Umpqua National Forest covers nearly one million acres and is located along the western slopes of the Cascade Mountains in Southwest Oregon. The Forest encompasses a diverse area of rugged mountains to 9200 feet in elevation, sparkling rivers, lakes, and deep canyons; producing a wealth of water resources, timber, wildlife, fish habitat, minerals, and outdoor recreation opportunities. Included within the Forest are the North Umpqua Wild and Scenic River, a portion of the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway, three wilderness areas, the Oregon Cascades Recreation Area, and the Diamond Lake Recreation Campsite, one of the largest developed recreational facilities within the Forest Service.

The Umpqua National Forest employs approximately 275 permanent and 150 temporary employees. The Forest has four Ranger Districts; located at Cottage Grove, Glide, Toketee, and Tiller; as well as the Dorena Genetic Resource Center which supports genetic tree improvement and vegetation management programs for Oregon and Washington. The Forest also provides administrative and engineering assistance to Wolf Creek Civilian Conservation Corps Center located near Glide.

Recreation opportunities abound including fishing, hunting, hiking, swimming, picnicking, rock-hounding, and camping. The Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness Area is a 33,000-acre, high mountain wilderness separating the Rogue and Umpqua drainages. There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails on the various districts and many developed recreation sites. There are also wilderness lakes and ponds, with fishing year round and miles of streams open for summer angling.

NORTH UMPQUA RANGER DISTRICT

The North Umpqua Ranger District is located in Glide, Oregon, which is 17 miles from Roseburg, Oregon. The Ranger District Office is located on the banks of the North Umpqua River and is adjacent to the Colliding Rivers where the North Umpqua River and Little River meet head-on. The community of Glide has a population of approximately 500. Roseburg has an estimated population of 19,000, but serves an overall area population of over 65,000. Roseburg is located on Interstate 5 and is 67 miles south of Eugene; 97 miles north of Medford; and 80 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. The Umpqua National Forest Supervisor’s Office is located in Roseburg.

The community of Glide has several restaurants, one bank, a post office, a gas station/store, a variety of churches, an active community club, volunteer rural fire department, part time medical clinic, Laundromat, motel, and several other small businesses. Glide has one four-year high school, a two-year middle school, and an elementary school all located within one mile of the North Umpqua Ranger District Office.

Apartments and houses are available for rent in Glide, Roseburg, Sutherlin, and in-between. The bulk of homes available for sale are in the $100,000 to $200,000 range. There are 6 houses, 4 apartments and 10 trailer spaces located at the Wolf Creek Job Corps administrative site. No government housing exists for these positions.
