Rainier, Oregon Resident Wins 2007 Doernbecher Mustang

Margaret Cemulini from Rainier won the drawing for the Kiwanis Doernbecher Mustang. The drawing was held September 3, 2007 at the Oregon State Fair. Each year the Kiwanis Clubs of Oregon and Southwest Washington together purchase an automobile to raffle. All proceeds for the raffle go to Doernbecher Children's Hospital. The winning raffle ticket was drawn by 14-year-old George Nolen Dehart, a patient at Doernbecher.

The raffled vehicle was a 2007 Ford Mustang GT. Close to 25,000 tickets were sold at $5 dollars each. The Mustang raffle is Kiwanis’ largest fund-raiser for Doernbecher Children's Hospital. In addition to the car raffle, Kiwanis conducts numerous other Doernbecher fund-raisers, including golf tournaments, bike rides, and the sales of Christmas ornaments.

For over two decades, members of more than 140 Kiwanis Clubs in Oregon and Southwest Washington have been committed to helping the children at Doernbecher. Through June 2007, Kiwanis Doernbecher Children’s Cancer Program has raised more than $2 million for the hospital.

In the early 1990s, Kiwanians led the drive to build the Kiwanis Doernbecher Bone Marrow Transplant Unit - the first and the only program of its kind for children in the region - and continued to provide annual support until the unit became part of the Kenneth W. Ford Northwest Children's Cancer Center in 1998. The following year Kiwanians established the Kiwanis Children's Cancer Fellowship Program to train the next generation of pediatric hematology and oncology specialists. They currently raise more than $150,000 annually for the fellowship program.
