Study Goals

· Ability to use basic greeting expressions and phrases formally and informally in conversation.

· Ability to ask someone’s name formally and informally and according to gender.

· Ability to introduce yourself formally and informally to someone else.

· Ability to use adjectives to describe yourself and other people.

· Ability to create sentences using adjectives and pronouns.

· Ability to write out the numerals in the Pashto script.

· Ability to form singular feminine adjectives.

Assignments for Independent Study

Getting Started, pp. 62-69, (PE)

· Read pp. 62-69. Listen to all of the accompanying CD-ROM activities and pay particular attention to sound, intonation and pronunciation. Practice saying the various greetings for “What’s your name,” “Who are you,” and “Goodbye.” These greetings/expressions change depending on the person’s gender and social status (formal vs. in formal speech). After listening and practicing the expressions, review some of the basic greeting expressions from the CR sheets you studied earlier in the semester. Note the differences between feminie formal and informal vs. masculine formal and informal. When do you use these? What are the distinguishing differences?

· HAND IN: Write out exercise 7, p. 67 PE

· HAND IN: Write out exercise 8, p. 68 PE

· HAND IN: Write 5 adjectives that describe you. Bring these to your tutorial and conversation session to share with the rest of the group.

· Read the conversations on p. 69 and listen to the them on the accompanying CD-ROM (exercise 13, p. 69). Afterwards, practice reciting the conversations yourself.

· HAND IN: Write out two dialogue similar to the ones in exercise 13 on p. 69 PE. Each speaker should have at least 4 lines.

Grammar Note, p. 70 (PE)

· Read p. 70 about the formation of singular feminine adjectives. Study the chart on p. 70 well.

· HAND IN: Based on exercise 14, p. 70 PE create a dialogue between 4 different people using the formal and informal register and addressing people of different gender.

Learn the Pashto Script, pp. 60-61, (PS)

· Complete pp. 60-61 on writing numerals in the Pashto script.

· HAND IN: Write out single digits 1-10 in the Pashto script and 6 examples of multi-digit numbers. You must include at least a double digit, triple digit, and quadruple digit.

Homework and Preparation for Tutorial

· HAND IN: Write out exercise 7, p. 67 PE

· HAND IN: Write out exercise 8, p. 68 PE

· HAND IN: Write 5 adjectives that describe you. Bring these to your tutorial and conversation session to share with the rest of the group

· Be prepared to share with the rest of the group the adjectives you chose to describe yourself.

· Be prepared to use adjectives to describe other people.
