FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Jackson, Ohio

Fourth Sunday after Epiphany

January 31, 2016

10:30 a.m.

Meditation

The people of Nazareth took Jesus to the edge of the cliff to throw him off to his death. What they didn’t realize is that is where he likes to walk…on the edge. And that’s where he expects us to walk with him.

Order of Worship

ORGAN PRELUDE

INTROIT “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” --Bell Choir

WELCOME AND PASSING OF THE PEACE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: God is our shelter and refuge;

People: The Lord is our fortress and defense.

Leader: Our hope in the Lord has never failed;

People: We will always praise God!

*HYMN: “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” No. 26

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

All: We have to admit, Lord Jesus, like the folks in your hometown we want to keep you and your love to ourselves. We may have gone to kindergarten, but we didn’t learn how to share very well. We’re more comfortable in the middle of people like us, than in walking the edge and reaching across borders of our own making with your unlimited love.

Hold our hands so when we walk near the cliff, we don’t fear falling off as we follow you.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: Friends, believe the Good News,

People: in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Amen.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

I Believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
