FACILITIES COMMITTEE MINUTES

June 18, 2012

Attendance: Joe Phelan, Tom Burnell, Sheldon Tieder, Mark Fleischhauer

The Committee reviewed drawings related to the following projects:

Site Improvements at BMS/RHS –

A drawing was reviewed that shows locations for improvements to make building exterior doors handicap accessible. The ramps are needed for ADA compliance. There currently wood ramps at these locations, but permanent ones are needed.

Locations include the gym/locker room area door next to the BMS recess area, the south end of the 140 wing, the doorway off the glass corridor between the 130 and 140 wings, and the high school cafeteria.

Construction of the ramps is to be completed before school re-opens in September.

Sidewalk and paving at CLS –

Two drawings were reviewed, option A and option B. The major difference between the options is the placement of the sidewalk connecting the sidewalk along Knollwood to the sidewalk at the front of the school.

Option A calls for the sidewalk to be placed on the parking lot side of the area of greenery that is between the driveway and the parking lot. In addition, parking spaces would remain along the driveway on the other side of the greenery and the driveway would become one way toward the school. A few additional parking spaces would be constructed at the ends of the parking lots in front of the school and at the west end of the school.

Option B calls for the sidewalk to be located on the driveway side of the greenery. Parking spaces would be eliminated along the greenery, allowing for two way traffic. Placing the sidewalk here would also keep cars that park in the parking lot from parking with their bumper protruding over the sidewalk. As in option A, additional parking spaces would be constructed in roughly the same locations.

The Committee discussed that option B would be preferred as changing from two way to one way traffic would be problematic, and it would be preferable to keep parked cars or those in the process of parking away from the sidewalk.

Further discussion took place regarding whether the egress from the parking lot should be closed at the end closest to the school, with a sidewalk rather than a crosswalk in this area. Sheldon will speak to the architect about this, and get a cost estimate for this additional section of sidewalk.

Respectfully submitted,

Mark Fleischhauer
