INTRODUCTION this module will cover chemistry in the home related to cleaning.

The home is an environment which can be neat and clean

Or messy and dirty depending on how it is maintained. The

Kitchen and bathroom, especially, can be breeding grounds for bacteria which can cause illness. This module will deal with cleaning supplies; how and why they work.

OBJECTIVE 1. Define terms related to bacteria and cleaning supplies

2. List types of chemical cleaning agents and their purposes

3. Demonstrate the proper way to disinfect a counter

surface and a cutting board

4. Explain why cleanliness is important

5. Describe surface bacterial contamination and how to disinfect

Activity Two

1. Locate and read the information sheet titled “Counter Contamination!”

2. Turn to locate the Glow germ spray instruction sheet and backlight in Kitchen #3.

3. In Kitchen #3, follow the instructions for applying the powder and washing it off.

4. Locate “Activity Two Question Sheet” and answer the questions on your own paper.

Title this sheet “Antibacterial Experiment.”

5. Write a paragraph on the same sheet of paper (not less than five complete sentences) titled, “It is important to sanitize our kitchen surfaces because...”

6. Locate the worksheet, “Secret Code Hand Washing Game” and complete as directed.

7. Clean up your module area and make sure that everything is returned to its proper location.

“Glogerm Spray Instruction Sheet”

1. Go to Kitchen #3 and locate the Glogerm powder. (Get from Mrs. Baggett)

2. Get sponge, cleaning agent (antibacterial dishwashing detergent), cleaning cloths & bucket.

3. Sprinkle the “germs” on the countertop and cutting board.

4. Wash the countertop and cutting board using the cleaning agent.

5. Rinse with clear water. (Do not immerse a wooden cutting board into water! It will warp the wood).

6. Wipe dry with a cloth.

7. Light the backlight and check your cleaning results.

8. Read the label of the antibacterial dishwashing bottle. What is the name of the active ingredient?

“Counter Contamination”

Bacteria are invisible to the naked eye but are everywhere! When left to grow unchecked, they can be transmitted (transferred) to humans through contact with contaminated surfaces or not washing hands after using the restroom.

Countertop and cutting board contamination, (as well as bathroom surfaces), is when bacteria have multiplied to a high enough level to cause illness. This is caused from not properly eliminating bacteria from surfaces, and from uncooked meat & poultry contacting the surfaces.

There are several cleaning agents on the market which do various specific or general cleaning. READ THE LABEL on the back, and follow the instructions for that specific product.

Cleaning surfaces with water, hot or cold is useless. You must use soap or detergent, preferably antibacterial, with hot water, and scrub vigorously “to suspend the microorganisms”.

An inexpensive cleaning agent is chlorine bleach. Cleaning with 1 tablespoon chlorine bleach per sink or bucket of hot water will sanitize most surfaces. To sanitize means to kill most of the harmful bacteria. (Always use vinyl gloves to protect hands from the irritation of corrosive chemicals)

Rinse several times with clear cold water.

Dry the surfaces thoroughly.

1. Locate and play the boardgame Germ Wars. On a sheet of notebook paper, write 10 facts from the boardgame.

Enrichment: Read the article Pestproof Your Home. Make a list of ways that you can pestproof you home.

2. Locate the posttest and complete it according to the directions.

3. Get out a piece of notebook paper and place your name, class and folder # in the upper right hand corner. Place your module name on the top line. Copy the following list, and then gather the assignments in order. Place the list on top and staple the stack together. Paperclip your pre/post test answer sheet on top
