What is APA?

The abbreviation APA stands for (American Psychological Association) and is most commonly used to cite sources within social sciences. According to the 6th edition, second printing of the APA manual, offers examples for the general format of APA research papers, in-text citations, endnotes/footnotes, and the reference page.

In APA format, your essays should be…

· Typed double-spaced

· On a 8.5” x 11” (standard-sized paper)

· And with 1" margins on all sides

· APA recommends using 12 pt. Times New Roman font

· Include a page header at the top of every page

· To create a page header, insert page numbers flush right, and then type "TITLE OF YOUR PAPER" in the header flush left.

Paper Sections that should be included in APA style format

· Title page

o Contain the title of the paper

o The author’s name

o & institutional affiliation (Example: Warren East High School)

o Include the page header

· Abstract

o Begin on a new page

o Abstract page should already include a page header

o On the first line of abstract page, center the word “Abstract” (no use of bold, italics, underlining, or quotations)

o On the next line, this is where you write a summary of the key points from your research.

o Abstract should include: research topic, research questions, participants, methods, results, data analysis, and conclusions.

o Abstract should be a single paragraph double-spaces and be between 150 and 250 words
