EXAMPLE OUTDOOR CLASSROOM KIOSK

(Small: 24” long x 18” tall)

Prepared by April Waltz, Alabama Wildlife Federation, Conservation Education Specialist

Tools: Cordless Power Drill, Circular/Jig Saw, & Phillips Head Screwdriver
Materials for Kiosk: / § (1) packet of cork board with (4) 12” x 12” boards ~ $7
§ (1) ~3” safety hasp hook latch (zinc plated) ~ $1
§ (1) bottle of Wood Glue (optional) ~ $5
§ (1) combination lock (optional) ~ $7
§ (1) 24” x 18” x ½” thick piece of treated plywood ~ $3 each or $23 for a standard piece 4’ x 8’ in size
§ (1) 2” x 4” x 8’ treated board cut into (2) 15” long boards and (2) 24” long boards ~ $2
§ (1) 2” x 2” x 8’ treated strip cut into (2) 15” long posts and (2) 24” long strips ~ $2
§ (1) packet of 2.5” self-drilling wood screws ~ $3
§ (1) packet of 1” screws ~ $2
§ (1) packet of 1.25” washers ~ $2
§ (1) 24” x 18” piece of .08 Acrylic Plexiglas ~ $7
§ (2) 2 ½” broad loose pin hinges with three holes per side (zinc plated for outdoors) ~ $6
§ (1) box of All Climate Rubber Weatherseal (for gaps 3/8” wide & 7/32” height) ~ $6
Materials for Roof: (optional)
§ Left over pieces of 2”x4” board that is at least 6” long
§ (1) packet of (4) 1.5” L-brackets with screws
§ (1) 32” x 10” x ½ inch thick of treated plywood / § 3-4 roofing shingles
§ (1) box of roofing nails

Step 1

Cut the plywood into a 24” x 18” rectangle.

Step 2

Use (8) 2.5” self-drilling wood screws to attach the (2) 2”x 4”x 24” boards to the (2) 2” x 4” x 15” boards using your drill. Once the screws are drilled in it should look like a 4” deep box that is 24” wide and 18” tall.

Step 3

Use (12) 2.5” self-drilling wood screws to attach the plywood to the box. Drill the screws through the plywood into the 2”x4”s. (Optional: You can also use Wood Glue to help seal the plywood to the 2”x4”s.) Once the screws are drilled in it should look like a “shadow box” when you flip it over with the plywood on the bottom.

Step 4

Use (4) 2.5” self-drilling screws to attach the (2) 2”x 2” x 24” strips to the (2) 2”x 2” x 15” strips using your drill. Once the four screws are drilled in, it should look like a “picture frame.”

Step 5

(This is the hardest step, so consider asking your home improvement store to help you with this step.)

Place the acrylic Plexiglas on top of the “picture frame” you just created. Drill (6) holes in the acrylic Plexiglas using a 3/16” drill bit. You should have two holes on both of the 18” sides and two holes on one of the 24” sides – you will not be drilling holes in the fourth side yet because the hinges will go on the fourth side to connect the Plexiglas frame to the wooden box.

Note: DO NOT put a lot of pressure on Plexiglas as it can easily break.

Step 6

Place washers over each hole on top of Plexiglas and then gently screw in each self-drilling screw by hand using a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Note: DO NOT over-tighten or put a lot of pressure on Plexiglas.

Step 7

Place the (2) 2.5” hinges on the Plexiglas frame (on the opposite side where the screws already are), and drill (3) small holes in the acrylic Plexiglas using a 3/16” drill bit for each of the holes in the hinges. Then attach the hinges using the screws included in the hinges packets.

Step 8

Using the screws included the latch packet, attach latch hinge to the front of the box (see “part A” below) and then attach the latch clasp (see “part B” below) to the bottom.

Step 9

Install Rubber Weatherseal around the interior junction of the frame and box. Add a slanted roof (if needed) to help weather-proof it as well.

Step 10

Cut cork board (if needed) and attach to plywood on inside of Kiosk with wood glue. Add “legs” to the side(s) or back so that it is the height you desire.
