EPISODE 2: “TWO TWINS AND A PANTHER”

INT. FOAM PARTY – NIGHT

Flashing coloured light speed across the room. Watery foam floats on the floor up to about waist level. Many people, mostly teenagers, dance on the floor through the foam. Loud music blares.

CAMERA CLOSE IN:


LILA TANGENT, (17) blonde hair, smiling and dancing with her friends. She is soaked from the foam.

She says something that is inaudible over music. Her friends nod.

She pushes her way through the crowd, who are all dancing.

INT. CORRIDOR

The corridor outside the dance floor has tiny specks of foam on it.

She walks towards the female bathroom, pushing open the door slowly.

INT. BATHROOM

A black gloved hand reaches over Lila’s mouth, preventing her from screaming. The balaclava-wearing PERPERTRATOR drags Lila across the bathroom into a stall and locks the door.

He takes his hand off Lila’s mouth for a second and she screams loudly. He puts his hand back on.

He pulls a knife from his pocket and opens Lila’s mouth.

He places the knife on her tongue and slices it off.

The tongue falls on the ground with a splat.

Lila tries to scream but she cant. She is bleeding a lot.

The perpetrator grabs a small packet of pills from his pocket and opens it up. He drops a lot into Lila’s mouth and holds her nose. She swallows them.

He does this again.

Eventually, Lila drops to the ground dead.

He leaves her there, dead in the stall and walks to the sink. He washes the blood off his arms and gloves. He leaves the bathroom.

INT. CORRIDOR

The perp takes off the balaclava and shoves it in his pocket. His face is not seen. He then takes off his gloves and put them in his pocket.

He enters the dance floor.

INT. POLICE STATION – RECREATION ROOM

KYLIE SEANDERSON (23), DERIK SEANDERSON (23), HARRY TYLE (21), and ANNA JERD (23), all sit at a table in the recreation room, doing nothing.

DERIK

(VO)

Sergent Rojemo has some pretty wild weekends. Well for a thirty-eight year old. And he has no problem telling us about them…

JUAN ROJEMO (38), bursts through the doorway loudly.

JUAN

I just got back from a spa weekend with my wife, and Joe’s gonna be out of action for a little while.

Everyone seems deeply disturbed.

ANNA
You named your penis Joe?

JUAN
No, my son Joe. I accidentally harpooned him on Saturday.

A whole heap of confused looks.

DERIK

(VO)
Anyway, my point is that it’s getting harder and harder for me to think of Sergent Rojemo as my boss. I’d better tell him that.

DERIK
Sergent-

JUAN
Shutup, Crewcut.

DERIK

(VO)
I’ll tell him later.

TRISHA IKNAUSE, (58), the police station’s secretary, walks.

TRISHA
We’ve got a Jane Doe, the inner city.

JUAN
Crew-cut! Blondie’s Bitch!

Derik and Harry stand up.

Derik looks at Harry, confused.

HARRY
I’m blondie’s bitch.

JUAN
You two are coming with me.

The three of them walk off speedily.

JENNY LIPPONDE (30), sits down at the table with Kylie and Anna.

ANNA
That’s so sexist.

JENNY
No it isn’t; you two got to field experience the other day, it’s just fair.

They both stare at her. Jenny smiles.

JENNY
I’m required by law to say that.

All three of them laugh.

INT. NIGHT CLUB

The foam party has dispersed from night before, still bits of foam on the ground. A JANITOR (54), long hair, mullet, leads Juan, Derik and Harry down a hallway outside the dance floor.

JUAN
So you found the body in the female bathroom?

JANITOR
Yes. I wasn’t sure if she was dead but I didn’t touch the body.

JUAN
Good, thankyou. When did you find out she was dead?

JANITOR
A few minutes later. I took a closer look. She wasn’t breathing and there was a lot of blood.

INT. FEMALE BATHROOM

The Janitor leads them in and points towards and open stall with the corpse in it.

JANITOR
In there.

JUAN
(sarcasm)

Thanks.

Juan, Harry and Derik walk towards the stall. The corpse’s eyes are open slightly, completely pale. Blood in small patches on the floor.

JUAN
No visible wounds. Blood around the mouth.

Juan puts on some rubber gloves.

DERIK
Shouldn’t we wait for forensics?

JUAN
Don’t worry, I can’t disturb the crime scene if I do this carefully…

Juan grabs the corpse’s chin and opens her mouth. The tongue is gone.

The three of them look shocked.

JUAN
That’s…normal…

DERIK
Blood loss?

HARRY
I don’t think so. The mouth heals faster than any other body part. There is less than pints of blood here.

JUAN
Good work, Bitch. If you weren’t so incredibly stupid you could have been a forensic.

HARRY
So I was right?

JUAN
Well, yes.

Harry silently screams “yes!”.

DERIK

(VO)
Just the other week I was the golden boy, and now I’m second best? This can’t be right.

JUAN
Disappointed, Crew-cut?

DERIK

Uh…why would I be?

JUAN
Oh, no reason.

INT. BATHROOM

Juan snaps a photo of the corpse in the stall. Derik and Harry stand back. The door to the toilets open.

A forensic analyst, ELISA KINGLEY (23), enters, wearing gloves.

DERIK

(VO)

And there SHE is. The beautiful woman I had a fling with a week ago.

DERIK
H-hey.

Elisa ignores Derik, passing over to the body. She puts on gloves and opens up the mouth of the corpse.

ELISA
Did you realise the tongue was…gone?

JUAN
Yes.

ELISA
Certainly strange, but not the cause of death.

JUAN
One of my geniuses figured that out.

HARRY
(VO)

Yes! He called me a genius!

ELISA

We’re bringing the body down to the city station for an autopsy.

JUAN
Of course you are.

Elisa spins around, some of the corpses blood spattered on her face. She looks pissed.

ELISA
Listen, you Blue eyed, brown skinned son of a bitch, if you have something to say, say it to my face. The reason I have to take this corpse to my station is because it’s the only one in a ten mile radius that actually has the capacity to CONDUCT an autopsy. So if you try to make a pass at me or anything I do have something to say to you: I don’t care about you or anything you have to about anything or anyone.

Juan looks shocked, almost scared.

DERIK

(VO)

No one talks to Sergent, hell I’ll say it, SARGE, like that. I could use this for me.

INT. BATHROOM – DERIK’S FANTASY

Elisa is looking at Juan confidently, Juan looks terrified.

ELISA
Stop calling Derik “crew-cut” again, unless you want him to call you Sarge. Clear?

Juan nods, frightened.

INT. BATHROOM – END FANTASY

Elisa leaves the bathroom, followed by the police officers. CORONERS enter with a gurney and a black sheet, ready to collect the corpse.

INT. HALLWAY

Derik pulls Elisa back while Juan and Harry continue down the corridor.

DERIK
Hey, uh, that was cool what you did to Sergent Rojemo in there.

ELISA
Terrific. We’re wasting time.

DERIK
Well I pulled you behind to ask if you wanted to go –

ELISA
No.

DERIK

But –

ELISA
No.

DERIK

But we –

ELISA
Yes, we “did it” once, but stop talking to me.

DERIK
But I thought we –

ELSIA
Oh my god…Find another person to fall into.

INT. RECREATION ROOM

Kylie, Anna and Jenny are all in the spots we left them in.

ANNA
I never realised how boring this place was.

JENNY
You get used to it.

KYLIE
So…this is supposedly the recreation room?

JENNY

We used to have a TV. A janitor accidentally clubbed it with a duster.

Anna looks confused. Kylie just takes it in.

ANNA
Hey! I know what we can do!

JENNY
What?

ANNA
We can go around to the all the officers and sergeants, raising money for a new TV.

KYLIE

That’s not even in the radius of realistic.

ANNA
If we don’t get enough money, just use it to buy a peppermint stand.

KYLIE
Okay.

JENNY
I’m gonna sit this out, but you two go ahead.

INT. CORRIDOR

Kylie and Anna walk down the corridor with a small bucket, knocking no office doors asking for money.

ANNA
So far we’ve made…seven dollars and thirty eight cents. And what appears to be a pebble.

KYLIE
We can’t even get a peppermint stand with this!

ANNA
I just made up the peppermint stand thing. There is no such thing as a peppermint stand.

KYLIE
Stop saying peppermint stand.

ANNA
We could go towards the other end. That’s where all the rich officers are.

KYLIE
Okay. But from now on, I’m just a bystander.

INT. DERIK’S APARTMENT

Derik is watching TV in a small, dirty apartment, still wearing uniform.

DERIK
(VO)
I don’t care what my sister, my family, my landlord, my friends, my accountant and my boss has to say, I like my apartment. It’s…homely. It gives me time to think. Time to think how Elisa turned me down even after I thought we were going out. Or how I get to leave the station an hour early because I live further from the city than most of the officers. But mainly how –

TYRONE BAGON (33), African American, tall, afro, “bling”, and has a PANTHER on a chain, with a collar etc like a cat slams open the door.

The panther roars, and Derik leaps out of the sofa.

DERIK
Tyrone! I told you just to use the keys I keep under the rock!

TYRONE
Someone stole the rock and the keys a while ago.

DERIK
Why are you here? And what’s with the panther?

TYRONE
You haven’t been paying the rent. And the panther was my uncle’s. It’s fully tame, don’t worry.

The panther is roaring angrily and scratching off the plaster off the wall with its claws likes a scratching post.

DERIK
But I have been! I could trade the weekly rent of this apartment for a KFC meal.

TYRONE
There might be a “clog” with my accountant, Ill check it out with him. Until then, you don’t live here. Get all your stuff and leave by tomorrow.

EXT. SIDEWALK

A busy residential street is taken up by a REMOVAL TRUCK, with Derik’s car behind it. They both drive off.

INT. KYLIE’S APARTMENT

A knock at the door. Kylie opens it, still wearing a nightie. Derik stands at the door with a duffel bag.

DERIK
Can I live here?

KYLIE
No.

DERIK
Please.

KYLIE
Pay me.

DERIK
What?

KYLIE
Pay me money.

DERIK
It’ll only be for a week or so.

KYLIE
A hundred bucks, please. And your staying on the couch.

Derik reaches into his pocket and pulls out some notes and gives them to Kylie.

DERIK
I’ll pay you the rest when I leave.

INT. KYLIE’S APARTMENT

Direk sits on the sofa watching a Woman’s TV show.

DERIK

(VO)
Although the presenter makes stunning bouquets, I didn’t really want to watch the Woman’s Channel. Unfortunately Kylie won’t let me use the electronics.

CARL GERDER (25), Kylie’s boyfriend, wearing one of Kylie’s nighties, leaves the bedroom into the living room.

He is grinning happily.

CARL
Hey, Derik.

DERIK

(VO)

Fuck off, you lagoon.

DERIK
(fake happy)

Hey, Carl.

Kylie looks in, from the kitchen.

KYLIE
Be nice to Carl.

CARL
He is.

KYLIE
That’s his fake happy.

CARL

Oh.

KYLIE
Anyway, want some pancakes?

CARL

Yeah, okay.

DERIK
Cool! Yeah!

KYLIE
Not you, Crew Cut. Find your own food.

DERIK
My hair’s growing back…

INT. DINING ROOM

Kylie, Carl and Derik sit at the dinner table. Kylie and Carl eat pancakes. Derik looks at the pancakes longingly.

CARL
Look, Derik, there might be some stale Cheerios in the pantry. But we’re out of milk.

DERIK
Oh, thanks. I’ll just eat them dry.

Derik grabs a cereal packet from the pantry and starts eating dry cheerios, crunching loudly.

KYLIE
If you’re going to eat so loudly go in the living room.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Derik is curled up on the sofa, covering himself with a floor rug. He is wide awake, even though the lights are off.

A loud, girlish GIGGLE comes from Kylie’s room.

Derik shudders.

DERIK

(VO)

I hate my life.

INT. POLICE STATION

Juan talks to Elisa.

ELISA
The autopsy revealed bruising in the throat and a huge amount of ecstasy in the gut.

JUAN
So this is like the last victim?

ELISA
Almost exactly. Serial killing?

JUAN
I dunno.

ELISA
Ever had a serial killing here?

JUAN
Not since Jack the Ripper.

ELISA
Jack the Ripper was English…

JUAN
I have to go…

INT. CORRIDOR

Kylie and Anna knock on a door in the hallway. LILE TYNAC (49), opens the door.

LILE
Hi?

ANNA
We’re collecting money to buy a television for the recreation room.

LILE
No.

ANNA
No what?

LILE
Just no.

The door closes.

INT. KYLIE’S APARTMENT

Carl walks out of the front door, and kisses Kylie goodbye.

Derik sits no the sofa, still in uniform.

Kylie goes into the kitchen.

DERIK

Kylie, can I have some food tonight?

KYLIE
No.

DERIK

(VO)

It hit me at that time why Kylie hated me so much.

Derik gets up and head into the kitchen.

INT. KITCHEN

Kylie doesn’t see Derik immediately. She looks up and sees him in the doorway.

KYLIE

What?

DERIK
I know it kills you that I wasn’t fully there for you when mom died but that that’s just the way I dealt with things. And now you’re just being a hypocrite for helping me. I’m sorry that I didn’t help YOU but what was s’posed to do?

KYLIE
I…

DERIK
Whatever. I’m going to that hotel down the street.

There’s a short silence.

KYLIE
You don’t have to.

DERIK
Don’t feign sorrow to me.

Derik storms out of the front door.

Then storms back in, grab his duffel back, and storms back out.

INT. HOTEL ROOM

Derik sits no the bed of a crappy hotel room. He appears upset.

A knock on the door. He gets up and opens it.

A PIZZA BOY, stands with a pizza.

Derik passes the pizza boy some money and takes the pizza.

He sits down on the bed, puts the pizza next to him, and resumes sulking.

Another knock at the door.

DERIK
Goddamit, I tipped you five bucks!

He opens the door. Elisa stands in the doorway, frowning.

Derik jumps back, terrified.

DERIK

OH GOD, I’M SORRY FOR WHATEVER I DID!

ELISA
No, it’s not anything like that. I just came here to…see you.

DERIK
I thought you said…?

ELISA
I kind of like you. You know, in a, normal, hat-you sort of way.

DERIK
Thanks, I know how hard that was for you to say.

ELISA
Just remember, we’re just friends.

DERIK
Yeah, sure.

INT. HOTEL ROOM – LATER

Elisa and Derik are naked under the bed.

The pizza falls off the bed, SPLAT on the ground.

INT. KYLIE’S APARTMENT

Kylie’s sits on the sofa, very upset-looking. The front door open. She spins around.

Carl looks at her from the doorway.

KYLIE

Carl! Why are you here?

CARL
I left my keys here…are you okay?

Kylie shakes her head, “no”.

Carl comes and sits next to her, putting his arm around her.

DERIK

(VO)

Whether it be realising your relationship was a lot more deep than you thought…

INT. HOTEL ROOM

Same as before.

DERIK

(VO)

Or just a LITTLE more deep, It’s good to have a knowledge of what is going on. No matter how trivial.
