ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES

Welcome to the fall 2016 Enrichment Activities at Hunters Woods Elementary School (HWES). The PTA wants your student to have a safe and enjoyable experience while participating in the Enrichment Activities (EA). To this end, please read the following guidelines.

1. Registration: The PTA requires that you complete the registration form found on the PTA website http://hwpta.org/enrichment and submit payment for your online registration via PayPal or credit card. Note: The only exception to this is that students applying for need-based scholarships must submit a paper registration form through the HWES front office. There will not be paper registration except for scholarship requests.

2. Deadline: Please complete online registration by 3:00pm on Friday, September 16, 2016.

3. Lottery: Many class sizes are limited by the vendor. If registration for a class exceeds the maximum allowed, then a lottery will be held. Enrollment is not confirmed until the last week of September, and the PTA will refund payment to parents of students who do not receive a lottery spot via PayPal (refunds processed mid-October.)

4. Cancellation: Cancellation requests must be sent in writing to and will only be accepted through Friday, September 30, 2016. Refunds cannot be issued after this date because the PTA will have paid instructors based on number of students enrolled in the first day of class. If you have a scholarship, please cancel by this date so your scholarship can be provided to another child.

5. Notification of enrollment: The Enrichment Committee will announce enrollment and other class information by email the last week of September. It is important that you provide a valid email address; please check that email for your confirmation and class announcements (last minute class cancellations, etc.) If you do not hear from the Enrichment Committee by September 30, please email us at with your student’s First Name, Last Name, and class requested (include copy of online confirmation).

6. Late pickup: Students must be picked up on time and in person. You must initial the Sign-Out Roster to release your student, so students will not be permitted to leave the school unattended to meet you at the curb, Kiss & Ride or to walk home. The school has no legal responsibility for children after school hours and the class instructors are responsible for them only during the contracted class time. Students will not be brought to the main office for late pickup. Furthermore, the PTA and its volunteer representatives are not legally liable or responsible for your children.

7. Late Fees: A late fee of $1 per minute will be charged for students who are picked up later than 5 minutes after scheduled dismissal. So, if the class dismissal is at 4:50 and you pick your student up at 5:00, the late fee due is $5. The late fee payment is due to the instructor when you pick up your student(s). Non-payment will result in the student being denied admission to the next class. If the late pickup occurs during the last class, the student will not be allowed to enroll for the following term.

8. Conditions of Enrollment: The PTA reserves the right to cancel your student’s enrollment if s/he is picked up late from the activity more than 2 times or if your student has disciplinary issues.

9. Missed Classes: Enrichment classes will not be held if the HWES is closed for any reason, including early dismissal. Every effort will be made to reschedule missed classes due to unexpected school closures or instructor cancellation. However, our ability to reschedule classes will depend upon the availability of the instructor and school facilities and no refunds will be issued for any reason.

10. Special Circumstances: If you have questions or special circumstances, please contact our PTA Enrichment Chairs directly at prior to the registration deadline. The HWES Principal and PTA President do not have a role in Enrichment Activities and will not intervene or address special requests.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Please review the descriptions below of the classes and refer to the vendor’s website for more information where available. Please send specific questions on class content to the enrichment committee at .

Acting: The enrichment acting class taught by Acting for Young People (sponsored by the City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts http://www.afyp.org/) is designed to help young actors develop their “actor’s toolbox”, working on the basics of acting (voice, body and imagination), story-telling, and culminating in an informal performance on the last day of the session for parents. These skills are explored through different activities and applied to new presentation material each session. No elaborate costume pieces will be needed; simple, representative items may be requested by the instructors. This class is open to new and returning students.

Art Attack: Local educator, Tracie Lambakis, has been teaching the Art Attack class at HWES for over ten years. This year, she will be teaching her regular class for grades 3-6 (Art Attack Sr.) and offer a second class for our younger students in grades K-2 (Art Attack Jr.) Come Learn, explore and create with Tracie! Using paints, pastels, markers, colored pencils, pen and ink we will create fun and beautiful projects every week! Simple brush strokes, color mixing, values, contrasts, highlighting and shadowing are a few of the lessons we will cover. Most importantly we’ll have fun in an encouraging environment! We will provide all equipment and materials.

Ballet/Jazz: This class is designed for younger ballet students of both genders. The curriculum includes an intro to ballet and jazz fundamentals. Students will learn ballet positions of the feet and arms and basic ballet steps that are appropriate for young children. Students will also be introduced to basic jazz movements using current upbeat songs. Classes include warm up, stretch, across the floor and learning fun dance combinations. Group movement such as forming circles, lines, and moving in unison will be taught. All classes use age appropriate music. We recommend that students purchase traditional leather or canvas soft ballet slippers (pink or white). Students will learn a ballet and/or jazz piece to be performed on the last day of class and parents are invited to join us for this Parent’s Day performance. This class is taught by the Creative Dance Centerwww.cdcdance.com

Basketball: Students will learn the fundamentals of Basketball, dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, footwork & fitness drills as well as teaching the concept of “team play” which is necessary to the game. Students will learn by playing fun skill building games, stations, and scrimmages each week. This class is taught by Coach Dennis with All Kids Sports & Games LLC.

Chess: Student will love to learn chess with the U.S. Chess Center’s instructors (http://www.chessctr.org/). They are certified by the United States Chess Federation, the governing body for competitive chess in the United States. Students will be organized in groups each week by ability, not age, and have ample opportunity to practice the skills they learn in class. The fall session will end with a class tournament and in the spring session, students will have an opportunity to attend chess tournaments in the local area.

Players will get a chance to be running backs, wide receivers, defensive ends, and corner backs. Learn to pass, catch, run routes and punt like the pros! We'll practice these skills while playing Button Hook, Down & Out, Pitch & Run and First & Ten. Scrimmages and Red Zone Challenges will test your skills, promote teamwork and encourage sportsmanship.

Guitar: Come join instructors from Learn Now Music for a group guitar class. Our budding musicians will participate in musical instruction and theory as well as musical games, special extension curriculum based activities, musical listening excerpts, related projects and more! Each student will receive a FREE rental instrument & materials to borrow for the duration of each session; materials are intended for in-class and at-home exploration, as well.Instruments must be returned at the end of the program on the last scheduled class day. This fun-filled class immerses students in all aspects of motion, developing their balance, coordination and strength, as well as promoting creativity, teamwork, and self-esteem. We use child-friendly music in all of our Hip Hop classes (often Kidz Bop), and all movement is age-appropriate. Students are asked to wear shoes that tie, lace or close with velcro so they don’t fly-off when performing kicks. Also, girls are asked to wear shorts or leggings under skirts and dresses because we will be spinning on the floor. Parents are invited to join us on the last day of class for a Parent’s Day performance. This class is taught by the Tommie Shaw & Company LLC http://www.tommieshaw.com/ and runs longer than other classes, ending at 5:05 (75-minute class.)
