COURSE OBJECTIVES

Reading Objectives - To improve your skills in reading introductory level materials.
You will read independently and in groups. The materials include biographies, narrative stories, and descriptions. You will learn and practice strategies to improve your knowledge of English vocabulary and sentence grammar, and you will use this knowledge to increase your understanding of text content and organization.

Writing Objectives - To improve your skills in planning and writing meaningful, understandable information.
You will learn to use the vocabulary, sentence structures, and organization patterns that we study in this course, and you will write paragraphs about your experiences and your course materials.

Study Skill Objectives - To learn to use internet materials for collecting information and improving your English skills.
You will use a dictionary and a grammar book to gain skills for independent learning, and you will develop strategies for finding and remembering word meanings and word usage in reading and writing.

ASSIGNMENTS


Out-of-class work is very important in this course. There are assignments for every class meeting. Assignments are in a green box at the end of each day’s class notes at https://people.rit.edu/kecncp. You must complete all assignments on time to do well in this course. You should plan to work on your assignments everyday before class meets, and come to class ready to participate in activities and discussions about your work. After each class, you should review your work and then continue your assignments. You should take pride in your work so your work is neat.

Your vocabulary, reading, and writing skills will improve if you work hard. It is up to you! If you really want to improve your reading and writing skills, you will need to read and study about two hours every day.

In this course, all late work will receive one-half credit if it is less than one week late. After one week, late work will receive no credit. If you cannot come to class when assignments are due, you should turn assignments in early.

In this course, we will work on three skill areas to learn and earn points
1. Using dictionaries

Longman Dictionary

a. You will learn how to use the Longman Dictionary of American English and how to prepare vocabulary study aids. [VS]

b. You will use dictionary skills for assignments, quizzes, and tests.

2. Developing vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension skills

The Story of George Washington Carver [GWC] and Grammar for KEC’s Courses [EG]

a. You will read and study this short biography.

b. You will have reading, vocabulary and grammar assignments for each chapter.

c. There will be quizzes and exams on these materials.

Thomas Alva Edison - Great Inventor [TAE] and Grammar for KEC’s Courses [EG]

a. You will read and study this short biography.

b. You will have reading, vocabulary, and grammar assignments for each chapter.

c. There will be quizzes and exams on these materials.

3. Improving sentence grammar and writing organized paragraphs

Academic writing

a. You will watch a movie divided into several parts.

b. You will write about specific topics for each part of the movie. You will learn how to prepare notes, a first draft, and revisions.

Everyday writing

a. You will keep a personal journal. You will earn points for this work.

b. There will be questions to answer for each journal. You need to write one paragraph or more for every journal assignment.


GRADES

You can earn up to 1200 points in this course.

· Vocabulary, Grammar, and Reading Quizzes -- 300 points (15 quizzes are worth 20 points each)

· Writing Projects -- 400 points (Journals are 2 to 4 points each for a total of 150 points; Academic Writing assignments are worth 50 points each for a total of 250 points.)

· Tests -- 300 points (3 tests are worth 100 points each. Tests will include things from class discussions, homework assignments, and quizzes.)

· Final Exam -- 200 points (You can find the final exam schedule in your student account.)

Attendance

· In this course, you will not get points for attending class. However, you will lose points if you have more than 9 absences.

· You will lose 50 points for 10 absences, 100 points for 20 absences, 150 points for 30 absences, and 200 points for 40 absences.

Extra credit (You can collect up to 30 extra credit points in this course.)

· There will be several opportunities to earn extra credit points.

Your total points will determine your grade as follows:

D 720 to 839 (60% to 69.99%)
F below 720 (below 60%)

INC You will need to give me a written request for an Incomplete before you complete the final exam, and you must have a good reason to receive an Incomplete.

W You should get permission from your career counselor to receive a W.
