Lord of the Flies Final Project, 50 points

You may choose from the following for your final project for the unit. In your project, you should demonstrate an understanding of the following elements in the novel:

· Setting (relevance)

· Plot

· Characters (characterization/character development, motivation)

· Symbolism (including private vs. conventional)

· Theme

· Deus Ex Machina

Project Options

1. Essay, Individual, 50 points. Write a thoughtful, well-developed essay on the novel. It is understandable that you will focus more on some of the elements of the novel and less on others, but you should demonstrate an understanding of all six items on the bulleted list. You should use specific evidence from the novel to support your ideas. Specific quotes/evidence from the book should be cited, using MLA format (Golding 21). See the attached list of ideas for essay topics.

2. Skit, Group, 50 points. Create a skit in which you act out parts of the novel that are particularly significant. Thoughtfully decide how best to demonstrate an understanding of the items on the bulleted list. Your skit should be 5-10 minutes long. It should be planned out and organized. Costumes/props should be utilized in order to get full credit. A written plan (outline, script, etc.) should be turned in before or after your skit.

3. Speech, Individual, 50 points. Compose a thoughtful, well-developed speech on the novel and present it to the class. It is understandable that you will focus more on some of the elements of the novel and less on others, but you should demonstrate an understanding of all six items on the bulleted list. You should use specific evidence from the novel to support your ideas and cite them verbally during your speech.

4. Poster or series of posters, Individual or pair/partners, 50 points. Create posters that utilize images and words. The poster will be graded on the extent to which you demonstrated an understanding of the six elements, the approrpriateness and effectiveness of your graphic images, use of grammatically correct and effective writing, and overall visual appeal/creativity/neatness/color. Avoid using pictures from the movie or book cover, etc.
