Enderby & District Credit Union Saluted by Community Groups

Enderby & District Credit Union wrapped up its 63rd annual general meeting on Tuesday, April 26 with an outpouring of tributes from community groups. The groups included Kingfisher Interpretive Centre, MacKenzie Camp, Enderby & District Community Resource Centre and the River Ambassador Program. EDCU presented major sponsorships to these and many other deserving community groups, programs and projects this past year, totaling more than $20,000.

MacKenzie Camp, which received a major funding boost from Enderby & District Credit Union, was represented at the meeting by its president Lorraine Powell. “The gift you have given us and our community is incredible – it will help us inspire the kids who attend our camps to be whatever they want to be. We want to say a big thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

The Kingfisher Interpretive Centre, represented by its chair Neil Brookes had a similar message. “In this day and age, places like Kingfisher are more important than ever. Kids are unmoored from the natural world, and we want to inspire them to get in touch. We appreciate this funding from EDCU so much, because some of our other funding sources didn’t come through. You’ve helped Kingfisher connect with 8,000 people every year, and we’re really very grateful for that.”

The Enderby & District Community Resource Centre’s programs coordinator Marlene Mydske also paid special tribute to EDCU for its ongoing financial support as well as a recent donation from its staff members, who personally raised and donated more than $400. While displaying brown bag dinners which are distributed to needy community parents, Ms. Mydske thanked EDCU and its members, “EDCU’s leadership has brought about positive change in this community – thank you to all of you.”

The River Ambassador Program, represented by coordinator Madison Giesbrecht provided the EDCU annual general meeting attendees with an overview of the program’s success. Last summer, the ambassadors spoke to more than 4,100 river users on topics relating to safe and respectful use of the river. The program was made possible by a number of local contributors, including EDCU. “The contribution from EDCU and others in our community have been vital for this program – thank you for your help protecting our beautiful river,” said Ms. Giesbrecht.

Ted Morrison, general manager of Enderby & District Credit Union, provided members at the annual general meeting with a summary of 2010. “Over the past several years, a lot has changed at your credit union. It is you as credit union members; you as credit union staff; and you as credit union directors that give this credit union the ability to make changes for the good of all. Be very proud of yourselves! There is no doubt in my mind that we as a cooperative organization make a big and very positive difference. Always remember you did that. You make it happen over and over again,” he concluded.

Business and Career Opportunities

New Training Programs Fill Skills Gap

It’s estimated that by 2019, over three-quarters of all jobs will require at least some post-secondary education. To give low-skilled employees a chance to move up and fill these jobs, BCs new $3-million Targeted Skills Shortage Pilot Program will help local businesses and non-profit organizations train current staff to better meet the demands of a changing labour market.

The pilot program is designed to help low-skilled employees who lack post-secondary training toward a degree or other credentials, gain new skills to improve productivity, take on new responsibilities and advance their careers. The Targeted Skills Shortage Pilot Program targets four high-growth sectors where the demand for skilled workers over the next decade will be strong: transportation and warehousing; manufacturing; health care and social assistance; and professional, scientific and technical services.

The Targeted Skills Shortage Pilot Program focuses on assisting low-skilled workers within businesses or non-profit organizations with less than 100 employees. Through the pilot, up to $1,500 per employee or $7,500 per employer is available to pay for tuition fees and purchase training services, books, manuals and other study materials. The program is expected to serve at least 1,200 low skilled employees around B.C. The Targeted Skills Shortage Pilot Program is one of many programs funded through the Canada-B.C. Labour Market Agreement that are designed to help meet the current and future labour demands of our economy.
