Ancient Artifact Museum Project

Mesopotamia Egypt India China

Due: December 13th

As a sixth grade we will be creating an Ancient Artifact Museum. You will need to choose from one of the projects below. You may work with a partner but you must be able to get together with your partner. This project will be worked on outside of class.

Using your Six Traits of Writing rubric you will be writing an informational paragraph on your chosen artifact. You will also be giving a 5 minute presentation in class the week of December 16th – 20th.

We will be grading on the following; creativity, neatness, representation of Ancient life/culture, completed information sheet, and content of your oral presentation.

Remember quality work is expected. These projects will be displayed in our Art Gallery and the Media Center for the entire school to view!

Please ask questions before the project is due for any clarification or concerns. We are available during lunch and most days after school or before school.

Make sure that you choose someone that lives close to you that you will be able to get together with. Also make sure this is a partner that you trust with your grade. You may choose to do the project on your own.

Ancient Egypt Artifacts:

Artifact1: Build a Pyramid and Sphinx

This project requires some household items. Sugar cubes are great for this but you may use whatever you would like! Don’t forget the scenery around the Pyramid; what kind of setting would you find a pyramid in? Your pyramid must include a view of the inside.

Artifact2: Canopic Jars

For this project you will need 4 spaghetti jars or cups, clay, and some creativity! You will want to paint them too!

Artifact3: Death Mask

Using your face or another object create a traditional Egyptian Death Mask. The purpose of the death mask was to give the person a face in the afterlife. In addition they allowed them to be recognized and accepted by other people. Depending on the persons social status determined how elaborate the mask was. Who was your person in Egyptian Society?

Artifact 4: Sarcophagus

Recreate a Sarcophagus. Use clay or anything else lying around the house. Be creative and keep in mind that the details signify the person’s social status.

Artifact5: Egyptian Style

Recreate some of the more popular Egyptian jewelry, amulets and headpieces. At least 3 pieces must be made to earn credit.

Artifact 6: Ancient Egyptian Travel Brochure

You may choose to use technology or do this by hand. Create a travel brochure convincing people to come visit Ancient Egypt. Talk about what they should visit, and how they should travel. Think about the time and what a travel brochure would have looked like if we were using it in the time of Ancient Egypt.

Ancient Mesopotamia Artifacts

Artifact 7: Ziggurat

This project requires some household items. Don’t forget the scenery around the Ziggurat; what kind of setting would you find a ziggurat in? Your ziggurat must include a view of the inside.

Artifact 8: Clay Tablet – Writing

Using clay create a clay tablet that shows writing from Ancient Mesopotamia.

Artifact 9: Hanging Gardens of Babylon

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Recreate what the Hanging Gardens including what is around them.

Artifact 10: Invention of the Potter’s Wheel

You may choose to use technology to create a powerpoint for this one or you may recreate the potters wheel and pottery that may have been created in Ancient Mesopotamia.

Artifact 11: Gods or Government of Mesopotamia

You may choose how to execute this project using technology, poster or a 3D model. Be sure to include at least 3 gods or 3 aspects of government.

Artifact 12: Sumerian Math / Clay Cones

Your project should highlight the importance of Sumerian math as well as show the Clay Cones.

Ancient China Artifacts

Artifact 13: Jade Pottery

People made different pottery and stone tools in their regional communities. Stone workers employed jade to make prestigious, beautifully polished versions of utilitarian stone tools. The status of jade continues throughout Chinese history. Pottery also reached a high level with the introduction of the potter’s wheel.

Artifact 14: Leshan Giant Buddha

Leshan Giant Buddha is carved out of a cliff face that lies at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers in the southern part of Sichuan province in China. Recreate the Buddha and the scene that it is placed in.

Artifact 15: Tomb of Clay Soldiers – Terracotta Army

Recreate the Tomb of Clay Soldiers with the Terracotta Army. Be sure to include appropriate details for each pit that the clay soldiers are in.

Artifact 16: Forbidden City

Recreate the Forbidden City as it was in Ancient China. Include at least one area inside that you can see. Do not forget to include the area surrounding the Forbidden City.

Artifact 17: Great Wall of China

Artifact 18: Temple of Heaven

The Temple of Heaven is a complex of religious buildings situated in the southeastern part of central Beijing. Recreate the temple and the area in which it is in.

Ancient India Artifacts

Artifact 19: Rangoli

Rangoli is an Indian sandpainted design often seen in Diwali, the Indian festival of lights. Rangoli can be any size and can use a wide variety of materials. Use symmetrical patterns to create drawings of plants, animals or a design of your own creation.

Artifact 20: Indus Script/Seals

Recreate at least 5 different Indus scripts. Use clay or appropriate material to recreate the scripts. OR Create a seal depicting a scene that would be found in the Indus valley.

Artifact 21: Caste System Brochure

Colorfully create a brochure explaining the 5 different levels of the Indian Caste system. Be sure to completely fill each page with facts and pictures.

Artifact 22: Indus Valley Pottery and Jewelry

Create an example of Indus valley pottery or jewelry. Use clay or appropriate materials to create the pottery. Explain the drawings or symbolism that goes with the pottery. Explain the significance of the different jewelry used.

Artifact 23: History of the Mehndi Art

On gloves or nylon material create an example of Mehndi art. Show the intricate designs and explain the purpose for the artwork.

Artifact 24: Map of the Indus Valley

Create a detailed map of the Indus River Valley. The map can be a 3-D version or it can be a detailed drawing of the valley.
