Internship Program

June 6, 2011 – July 29, 2011 - Virginia Association of Broadcasters Summer Internship Program –2 college students participated in an 8 week structured internship program in our News Department. This program offers undergraduate training in broadcasting related programs to college juniors and seniors.
January 16, 2012 - February 17, 2012 - WWBT had a story on our website, www.nbc12.com, that describes the Virginia Association of Broadcasters’ 2012 Summer Internship program. There was also a link to the VAB’s website, www.vabonline.com, where more information could be found about this program and other resources through the VAB.

June 1 – June 3, 2011 – WWBT Commercial Production hosted a senior from Collegiate High School for a week during her Senior Project which is a requirement for graduation. Her project was focused on Communications and she spent the week observing in Commercial Projection. Station Personnel involved – Creative Services Manger and other members of the department.
October 20, 2011 – WWBT Senior Manager spoke to a Government class at John Marshall High School on behalf of Junior Achievement of Central Virginia’s “Empowered Through Ethics” program. This program was about the importance of ethics in business. Discussed how ethics plays a part in managing a news station and conducting business. Station Personnel involved – Vice President & General Manager.
April 4, 2012 – WWBT’s General Sales Manager attended the Junior Achievement Dream Job Speaker Series on Careers in Media & Communications. The purpose of this program is to bring role models from the community into the classroom to deliver educational programs geared towards Junior High and High School students. April 26, 2012 – WWBT participated in Virginia State University’s 7th Annual Mass Media Day Leadership Symposium. WWBT’s Vice President & General Manager served as a guest panelist discussing careers in broadcasting, preparing for interviews and self development. Participate in broadcast career scholarship programs for students.

Describe Scope of Broadcasters’ Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

Raycom New Media Scholarship Student/Intern – One student from Virginia Commonwealth University was the recipient of a $2000 scholarship and a 12 week internship with WWBT. This opportunity was provided by Raycom Media to give a deserving, multi-media journalism student hands-on experience with all aspects of modern news production, primarily focused on writing, producing and posting material to the website and mobile products.
