Congratulations!! You have won the contest to create your own dream home. Now you must design it. This project will test your knowledge of applying area formulas in a real world setting. You are to design your own dream home to scale on graph paper.

Requirements for this project

1.  Using graph paper, draw the floor plan for your home. Use each block to signify “x” square feet in the actual home.

a.  Your house must be a minimum of 2500 square feet in area. You will need a minimum of 2 sheets of graph paper for the house. Each paper to signify a level of the home.

b.  You must choose a minimum of two shapes from each category below so that your house has at least 8 different types of shaped rooms.

Category A Category B Category C Category D

Square Parallelogram Triangle Circle

Rectangle Trapezoid Hexagon Semicircle

Rhombus Pentagon Heptagon Octagon

*Bonus Points will be awarded if all 12 shapes are used in the house*

c.  The house must have the following rooms:

Garage 2 Bathroom Dining Room/Breakfast Nook

Kitchen 3 Bedrooms Living Room/Family Room

2.  All permanent fixtures such as sinks and toilets, islands, fireplaces, etc should be represented in your blue print.

3.  Calculate and label the square footage of each room of the house, and your entire home by using your area formulas. Find room areas; separately, and then find the area as a whole (don’t forget to add hallways to the total square footage). Round any measurements to the nearest foot.

4.  You must provide the scale factor of the actual house size to the blueprints. (Example: 1in = 5 ft)

5.  List all formulas that are used with calculations on the CALCULATIONS SHEET for each room (SHOW YOUR WORK!!!!)

6.  Calculate the cost of your dream house, using the cost sheets included (When calculating the cost of your house you must have at least 5 “extras” added to the final cost, a list of Dream House Extras is included. Feel free to included something not on the list, just be sure to look up an accurate cost of the extra you decide to use)

7.  This project will be graded on accuracy, neatness, and organization. You must turn in the following

a.  A neat plan on graph paper (with the rooms labeled, and floors labeled, floors should match up on top of each other. You need AT LEAST: 1st floor and second floor. A backyard or extra floors is EXTRA CREDIT)

b.  All formulas and calculations are to be neatly organized and displayed, on your calculations sheet, and should be organized by room and the formula used should be shown don’t forget units! Total area should also be calculated on this sheet and clearly labeled)

c.  Calculated cost of house on cost sheets. (with at least 5 “extras”) Cost sheets are included.

8.  Extra Credit – You may include a scaled drawing of the backyard and its features – pool, landscaping, patio, tennis court, etc. The scale drawing must also include area calculations, as well as labels, and a total coast that will be added to the cost of building your house on your cost sheet. (extra credit cost sheet is attached as well as a price sheet)
