PROFILE

BWP is seeking applicants for immediate hire for the position of Senior Electrical Engineer. The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for one or more functions within the Engineering Section of the Electrical Services Division which includes all the substation, transmission and distribution related engineering work. Currently, BWP is in the midst of $60 million in Smart Grid-related projects and the development of a Distribution Master Plan.

The Senior Electrical Engineer will report directly to the Manager Transmission & Distribution Engineering. The Transmission & Distribution Engineering Section consist of seventeen (17) employees in four (4) distinct groups: Planning & Records, Distribution Capital Projects, Customer Engineering & Street Lighting, and Substation & Automation.

The Senior Electrical Engineer, depending on assignment, will have the following essential functions: directs the design of electrical systems of generating units, distributing stations, switching stations, and their auxiliary electrical systems, underground conduit and cable systems for the transmission and distribution systems; guides system planning studies; oversees system protection calculations and settings; directs the design of new electrical systems for buildings, and makes and directs preparation of estimates of cost for electrical installations; supervises the preparation and review of finished work drawings for electrical construction; prepares and directs preparation of specifications and requests for electrical equipment; reviews detailed drafting and engineering calculations; serves in a technical advisory capacity for the site plan review process; supervises the maintenance of records relating to system operations; directs, assigns and evaluates work; makes effective recommendations regarding hiring, promotions and transfers; effectively recommends disciplinary action as needed up to and including termination; participates in the adjustments of grievances; drives on City business.

The Senior Electrical Engineer is an integral member of the utility’s Transmission & Distribution Engineering Section and will play a critical role in shaping and developing BWP’s future organization, service reliability, and financial strength.

The distribution system is also experiencing growth in certain areas of the system and has an aging 4 kV distribution system that limits the system flexibility to manage load growth while continuing to deliver high reliable service accustomed by BWP customers. BWP is adding new enabling technology and is in the mist of utilizing the new technology to further its deliverable of reliable service at the least possible cost.

REQUIREMENTS

The minimum qualifications for this position are any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to acceptable job performance as determined by the City. An example combination includes, but is not limited to a B.S. degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering (preferably electrical); four years of professional electrical engineering experience including two years at the level of Electrical Engineering Associate.

Licenses & Certificates:

The candidate must also possess a valid California Class “C” driver’s license or equivalent at time of appointment.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

· Knowledge of electrical engineering, design and operating practices related to electrical transmission and distribution, electrical substations, and related auxiliary equipment.

· Knowledge of the principles and practices of sound personnel management, supervision, training, and performance evaluation and the ability to select and evaluate staff.

· Knowledge of organization principles and practices.

· Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

· Knowledge of administration principles and methods including goal setting, accountability, budget preparation, oversight and implementation.

· Ability to prepare reports and studies relating to electrical engineering; supervise and review the work of engineering and technical personnel; review and prepare specifications, estimates and lists of materials; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.

· Ability to interpret and explain transmission and distribution engineering policies and procedures or rules and regulations.

· Ability to administer construction contracts.

The ideal candidate will possess the skill to foster a teamwork environment. The Senior Electrical Engineer must have the ability to organize and prioritize tasks, analyze problems and develop effective solutions. He/she will analyze, comprehend, and apply administrative, departmental and City policies, procedures, and regulations. He/she must have the ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written.

The City of Burbank, incorporated in 1911, hugs the eastern San Fernando Valley, nestled between the Hollywood Hills and the Verdugo Mountains. COMPENSATION

The monthly salary range for this position is $8,636.96 - $10,493.90 and is dependent upon qualification and experience. Salary is not subject to social security. Additionally, BWP provides up to a 5.25% retention compensation for this position.
