Title / Describe traditional Pacific Island family occasions and associated protocols in an ECE service

Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to describe: the family occasion and its traditional significance to the specified Pacific Island culture; and the Pacific Island protocols associated with the specific occasion to support children’s learning and appreciation of the culture in an ECE service.

Explanatory notes

1 Three 'broad age groups' are defined in Te Whāriki for children. These are overlapping age categories and aredefined as:

infant – birth to 18 months;

toddler – one year to three years;

young child – two and a half years to school entry age.

Evidence of at least one category or a group from any category, or a group from across the categories is required in this standard.

2 An early childhood education (ECE) service may include a centre-based service, hospital-based service, or home-based service. The home-based service may be nominated by the child’s parent, be the child’s own home, or the home of the educator.

Evidence of one type of service is required for this unit standard.

3 Family occasions must be relevant to a specified Pacific Island nominated by the candidate and agreed by the assessor. The Pacific Island family occasions must be in accordance with culturally appropriate practices for the specified Pacific Island within a New Zealand ECE service.

4 Definition

Protocols will be dependent on the family occasion and the Pacific Island.

7 Family occasions may include but are not limited to – funerals, weddings, birthdays, Children’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter, Christmas, White Sunday, Hair Cutting, Ear Piercing, Tattoo. The specific occasions will depend on the traditions of the specified Pacific Island.

Evidence must include the protocols for at least three family occasions and reflect the traditional family structure for observing those occasions.

Describe the family occasion and its traditional significance to the specified Pacific Island culture.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Description identifies the occasion and its traditional significance for the specified Pacific Island.

1.2 Description identifies the roles of the participants in accordance with culturally appropriate practices for the specified Pacific Island.

1.3 Description explains the significance of the occasion for the specified Pacific Island community in New Zealand.

Outcome 2

Describe the Pacific Island protocols associated with the specific occasion to support children’s learning and appreciation of the culture in an ECE service.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Description identifies the appropriate protocols for each of the participants in accordance with culturally appropriate practices for the specified Pacific Island.

Range may include – consultation with appropriate elders.

2.2 Description identifies the appropriate dress for each of the participants in accordance with culturally appropriate practices for the specified Pacific Island.

2.3 Descriptions of the specific occasion are delivered to children in accordance with culturally appropriate practices for the specified Pacific Island and the requirements of the ECE service.
