Eunice M. Weed, 94
MUNCIE - Eunice M. Weed, 94, Muncie, died Tuesday evening at the Muncie Health Care Center.
She was born in Gary, the daughter of Martha Belle Johnson Carpenter and Henry Carpenter. Eunice grew up in Iowa, lived in Wisconsin and moved to New Castle, where she graduated from New Castle High School in 1928. She began her career working for Muncie Mayor George Dale. She then worked for Muncie Products and later, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farmers Home Administration. She was transferred to Ohio and worked there until she retired in 1971.
After retirement, she and her husband were named curators of Campbell Mansion, Bethany College, Bethany, W.Va. The Campbell Mansion, a scenic museum place annually visited by people from throughout the nation and world, was the rambling, picturesque, 27-room home of Alexander Campbell. Campbell was the founder and first president of Bethany College and one of the principal founders of America's largest indigenous religious group, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
She was on the committee that formed the Southside Christian Church where she was a charter member. She also served as secretary and vice president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees; did volunteer work for Dr. Roach at the Muncie Eye Center; worked at Fran's House of Ceramics and enjoyed sewing, quilting, ceramics and quoting poetry.
Survivors include two daughters, Martha A. Porter (husband: Daniel), Muncie, and Frances Ann Reynolds (husband: Jim), Muncie; one granddaughter, Pamela Jeanne Wyrick (husband: Tommy), Dallas, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Jessica L. Tatum, Dawn Cloyd, Jamie Conyers, Joseph Porter, Jonathan Porter and Deborah Joy Zehringer; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, James B. Martin in 1967; her second husband, Raymond E. Weed in 1972; a step-son, Paul R. Weed in 2001; one brother, John Carpenter in 1995; and two grandsons, James D. Reynolds in 1967 and Daniel J. Porter in 1993.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday in The Meeks Mortuary Chapel with Dr. James P. Day officiating. Burial will follow in the Elm Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary from 4 until 6 p.m., Sunday or an hour before the services on Monday.
