MEMORANDUM FOR ROTC Programs sending Cadets to the Army Mountain Warfare School during fiscal year 2009.

SUBJECT: LOI for Cadets attending the Army Mountain Warfare School (AMWS).

1. Paperwork. Every Cadet arriving at AMWS must have the following paperwork: ten copies of orders, a complete DA 705 APFT Scorecard dated within the previous six months, a DA 5500-R body fat worksheet if the Cadet is overweight as noted on the DA 705, and a TRADOC Form 350-18-2-R-E (https://www.infantry.army.mil/AMWS/ ) completed by Cadre and Cadet. They also must have return flight reservations arranged by the ROTC cadre. The ROTC battalion will have 72 hours from the start of the course to get any missing paperwork to the AMWS before the AMWS drops the Cadet for not meeting the course pre-requisites. Cadets will be weighed (IAW AR 600-9) the day they arrive at AMWS.

2. Travel. All Cadets need to arrive as per CCIMS and will be lodged at University Inn, 5 Dorset Street, South Burlington, VT 05403, 802-863-5541, 264-4105/4106 the day prior to course start. Cadets will travel to AMWS by the most cost effective method to the government. Because of the remote location of the AMWS, most Cadets travel by air. Flight arrangements to and from the AMWS must be arranged by the ROTC cadre at the host university, and Cadets must have a complete return flight itinerary before arriving at AMWS (see para. 3 for departure info). Cadets must fly into Burlington International Airport (BTV) to ensure a smooth transition. Cadets must arrive on the day of inprocessing IAW the dates established on the AMWS website (TY 07-08 link). Arrival time at the school must be NLT 1400. The AMWS provides a bus to pick up students (1st bus departs airport at 1000hrs.). If the bus is not there, call the AMWS. If Cadets are unable to arrive by mid afternoon on the report day, they must arrive the day prior. This is recommended for Cadets flying from the south and/or west. They will take a shuttle to the University Inn in South Burlington for their first night’s lodging. They will sign in at the hotel and be roomed with another Cadet. There is no cost to the Cadet for this night’s lodging. Cadets will then take the hotel shuttle to the airport to meet the AMWS bus. ROTC battalions must fax or email Cadet Itineraries to the USACC LNO NLT 5 days prior to the course start date to determine contracted lodging requirements.

3. Departure from AMWS. Cadets will graduate at 1300 hrs on the Friday their course ends (note: this is different than what is on the website). Departure flights should be made for that day NET than 1600 hrs. This will allow adequate time for Cadets to travel to the airport. If a Cadet needs to leave prior to graduation for whatever reason the AMWS cadre or CC LNO will make return flight arrangements.

4. Billets at AMWS. Cadets are billeted at the AMWS at no cost. Billeting at the AMWS for students is in a squad bay arrangement.

5. Meals. Cadets are fed at the AMWS at no cost to the Cadet. They will be issued a meal card when they inprocess the school. Cadets will need to pay for their meals on their travel days to and from the AMWS and claim it on their travel voucher upon completion of their travel.

6. Preparation. A complete student guide is located at the website noted in paragraph 1. Check the links within that website as well. Cadets should come to AMWS in the best possible physical condition. The course is both physically and mentally demanding. Most training takes place out-of-doors and training is not cancelled due to weather. The environment also takes it toll psychologically, so Cadets need to arrive mentally prepared to train in any environmental condition. Cadets should review their knots prior to arriving at the school with an EMPHASIS on PURPOSE & CHECKPOINTs. (see pp. 71-96 of the 2007 Military Mountaineering Student Handout – available at the AMWS link listed above).

7. Equipment. Cadets need to bring all equipment on the AMWS Winter Military Mountaineering Course packing list (encl 5 of AMWS Student Guide) which is issued by their ROTC battalion. If there are items of equipment your school does NOT have, you need to fax a copy of those shortages to the CC LNO as soon as possible. The will allow the CC LNO & AMWS to prepare for the shortages. The AMWS will issue mission specific and cold weather equipment to the Cadets during inprocessing (such as plastic mountaineering boots, skis, snowshoes, ice axe, etc). It is not necessary for Cadets or cadre to buy any of these items. All equipment issued and used at the AMWS meets the highest safety standards and is routinely inspected and replaced as needed. The AMWS allows students to bring and use personal cold weather clothing and equipment. However, the AMWS cadre will approve the use of it. A general guideline is that the clothing or equipment should have a tactical color (black, brown, green, etc) with a subdued logo (this can be done with a laundry marker) and be clean, and serviceable. Cadets will not be authorized excess baggage to bring additional equipment to AMWS.

8. Medical Issues. The AMWS has a medical station on site and highly qualified medics. If a Cadet needs medical facility care they will be transported to the closest civilian medical facility for treatment. Cadets need to be aware that they may need to provide proof of insurance at the medical facility as well as have a way to pay for any medications prescribed. They will not be denied treatment. Cadets also need to be aware that they will need to file a claim with the Department of Labor to get those medical expenses recouped. The AMWS will start the necessary Line of Duty paperwork and give it to the Cadet to hand carry back to the ROTC battalion. From there it will be the battalion’s responsibility to follow up with the DOL. The medical facility is familiar with these procedures.
