______ _____, 2017
Dear Representative Pelosi,
I am joining the not-for-profit American Eagle Foundation in their effort to establish “American Eagle Day” annually on June 20th in the United States.
In order for this to happen, the House must make an exception to its House Rule ban on commemorative resolutions and join the United States Senate in passing a Joint Resolution that would add “American Eagle Day” to 36 U.S. Code Chapter 1, list of Patriotic and National Observances.
For over 200 years, the majestic Bald Eagle has served as our country’s living symbol of freedom, spirit and democracy. It was selected as the U.S.A.’s official national emblem on June 20, 1782 by the Second Continental Congress.
As you may know, the Department of Interior and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed the Bald Eagle from Endangered Species Act protection on June 28, 2007.
This special dedicated day on June 20th offers the American people a united opportunity to celebrate the successful recovery of our National Bird to our lands, waterways and skies. It also gives them good reason to commemorate the American ideals, values, qualities and heritage that this precious National Treasure represents.
The United States Senate introduced and passed special "American Eagle Day" resolutions in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, & 2016.
The United States House of Representatives introduced and passed special "American Eagle Day" resolutions in 2007, 2008, and 2010 prior to the House Rules ban on commemorative resolutions.
As of June 20th, 2016, Governors from a combined total of 49 states have recognized “American Eagle Day” in their states between 1995 and 2016. 2016 was our most successful year with 48 state Governors participating (Alaska and California chose not to participate).
Thank you for your kind, patriotic and timely support of this special request.
Respectfully Yours,
