Procedure for installing PTDS Lite on Windows 95/98 platforms

Users need to take a special step when installing PTDS Lite from the CD-ROM that is included in the book on Windows 95/98 platforms. This is because the different Windows versions (95/98/NT) have a completely different way of handling of the path structure. In MS-DOS (the basic operating system behind Windows), only directory names with 8 characters and in one word (no spaces) are allowed. Otherwise, this can lead to strange results, if some software needs to specify the location of needed files and libraries. Since originally PTDS Lite was created for an NT platform, the default path specification given on the CD-ROM could give rise to problems on Windows95/98.

To solve these problems, the user has to deinstall the PTDS Lite program (if it is already installed) and has to reinstall it in a directory/folder without any spaces in the file name. Unfortunately, the default setting on the CD-ROM is "C:\Program Files\ptds1.1lite". Thus, during the installation on Windows95/98 the user should specify a new install location, such as "C:\PTDS-Lite" (important: there should be no spaces in this install path). Then PTDS Lite will work properly on Windows95/98.
