Main Purpose of Post:
The postholder will contribute to the extended education where applicable and care of children attending Golwg y Bannau / Camlas residential / respite unit which, provides placements to meet the needs of children with disabilities on weekday evenings, weekends and during school holidays. The postholder will primarily be responsible for the care of children attending the residential and / or respite provision.
Principal Responsibilities:
1. To work day, evening and night shifts and weekends and to sleep in on a rota basis as appropriate.
2. While on shift, to ensure that all aspects of provisioning the unit, cleaning, caretaking and security are attended to.
3. Work with other agencies to enable, promote and resource the Unit.
4. Operate appropriate systems for children under the direction of the Senior Care Officer.
5. To undertake project work on a “task and finish” basis under the direction of the Senior Care Officer, Deputy Care Manager’s and Head of Care.
6. To co-operate with their employer and follow health and safety advice and instructions
7. To abide by the principles and practice of equality of opportunity as laid down in the Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy
8. Because of the nature of the work involved, the post you are applying for is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2013) - This position has a requirement for an Enhanced DBS Check, this position is classed as regulated activity under the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 as amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 and will be subject to a check to the list of those people barred from working with children.
Statutory responsibilities and professional knowledge and understanding
9. To ensure that All Wales Child Protection Procedures, the provisions of the Children Act, towards a better life and brighter future and Children Homes National Minimum Standards are adhered to at all times.
10. To manage the behaviour of individual young people and groups of young people appropriately and within the guidelines as laid down by CSSIW and the Home.
11. To act in accordance with the Department’s Equal Opportunities Policy and to challenge attitudes and practices within the residence which are discriminatory.
12. To ensure that all activities within the residence are carried out with due regard to health and safety requirements, undertaking risk assessments where appropriate and being responsible for the health, safety and welfare of all staff and children.
13. To keep up to date with new developments, practice, and legislation in childcare.
Professional practice
14. To actively promote, participate in and ensure the provision of high standards of physical care, hygiene, safety and welfare of all residents including looked after children. Ensure the provision of a warm accepting environment within which the emotional, social, educational, cultural and spiritual needs of individual young people can be met.
15. Implement guidelines for administration of medication as appropriate and support the Senior Care Officers to administer any prescribed or non prescribed medication.
16. To support the Senior Care Officer maintain case records and write reports in accordance with policy and procedures.
17. To assist with planning and preparation for the admission and discharge of young people to and from the residence, and to assist in the assessment of needs as required, encouraging children to be involved in the planning process as appropriate.
18. Where appropriate, to assist in assessment of needs and in the formulation of individual care plans for young people, consistent with placement plans, in conjunction with senior colleagues and other professionals.
19. To organise, attend and contribute to reviews, case conferences and case planning meetings in their role as Key Worker.
20. To work in partnership with families and carers of young people in achieving the aims and objectives of the young people’s care plans and education, including working in the community as necessary.
21. To observe, assess and monitor young people’s health, development and emotional well-being and interpret verbal and non-verbal signs, initiating appropriate action when necessary.
22. To organise, encourage and share in recreational and leisure activities which meet the needs and wishes of the young people in the residence and to ensure that young people are encouraged to develop life skills, social skills, and age appropriate independence.
23. To maintain “key worker” tasks and responsibilities under the direction of the Senior Care Officer.
24. To actively participate in own development and supervision arrangements.
25. To work flexibly and provide support and cover for staff as required.
