RESEARCH INTERESTS
Past research projects examined infant/toddler play, mastery and infant attachment to mother/father and issues of parent-infant regulation beginning in the neonatal period and continuing through the fourth year of life. These studies focused on individual differences concerning processes related to emotional and cognitive-motivational health and deviance, using measures of family functioning, motivation and affective organization. Other past studies investigated the relationship between maternal depression and child development in children age 3½ and their depressed mothers using similar measures. Currently, social, cognitive, motor and emotional functioning are being examined in infants whose parent(s) is/are diagnosed with schizophrenia or substance dependence. We hypothesize that at-risk infants may demonstrate the same kind of deficits in the areas of attention, affect regulation, social interaction, and motor development that school-age at-risk children show. Infants at 6, 12, and 18 months are being assessed using standardized as well as newly developed measures. Understanding the neurodevelopmental and genetic aspects of these disorders is central to this research, which is linked to a large multidisciplinary research team. Implications for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of behavior disorders in very young children are a major goal of these studies
