Atlantic recording artist Melanie Martinez has announced the final dates of her marathon North American headline tour. The “CRY BABY Tour” continues September 19th at The Norva in Norfolk, VA continuing through late October (see attached itinerary). Martinez’s kaleidoscopic companion video for “Alphabet Boy” has proven an online phenomenon, earning over 1 million individual views in the first eight hours of its release; Melanie’s fastest growing video yet. “Alphabet Boy” – which now boasts total views exceeding 11 million – is streaming now at Martinez’s YouTube channel, which now has over 2.2 million subscribers.
The unstoppable popularity of “Alphabet Boy” lit a fire on Martinez’s already impressive sales figures, with “CRY BABY” catapulting to #31 on the SoundScan/Billboard 200 after a 31% sales increase in the days following the new video’s debut. “CRY BABY” made a stellar chart debut upon its arrival last year, arriving at #6 on the SoundScan/Billboard 200 while also coming at #1 on the “Top Alternative Albums” chart. The album – which follows the Long Island-based artist’s 2014 breakthrough, “THE DOLLHOUSE EP” – also had an explosive first week on the iTunes Store, ascending to #1 on the “Top Alternative Albums” chart as well as to #4 on the overall “Top Albums” tally.
“Cry Baby,” the album’s compelling title track, was joined earlier this year by a new companion video. The clip drew 1 million views in its first 18 hours online. “Cry Baby” has now received close to 19 million views via Martinez’s official YouTube channel.
Named by both SPIN and Idolator as one of 2015’s top pop albums, “CRY BABY” is of course highlighted by the soon-to-be-gold certified smash, “Pity Party,” which debuted at #2 on the iTunes Store’s “Top Alternative Songs” before becoming a worldwide Spotify success, reaching #10 on the US Viral 50 and #13 on the Global Viral chart. In addition, the “Pity Party” companion video was tagged #hitoftheweek by MTV Hits, guaranteeing that week’s most plays on the network. The clip – conceived and directed by Martinez herself – has now drawn more than 44 million views and counting at her official YouTube channel.
“CRY BABY” is among the most inventive and striking debut albums in recent memory, an unforgettable collection of provocative pop framed as a modern fairy tale, complete with storybook illustrations and a dramatic structure that takes listeners on a dark journey through the life of its title character.
