Complying with the New ENTRY LEVEL DRIVER TRAINING Regulation

A joint project of the Maryland Motor Truck Association and Jack Burkert, Safety Training Consultant

We don’t advertise in this publication, but we do try to keep our readers informed. This sometimes includes information about a new product available to assist carriers. We received the following and thought it might be of benefit to many of our readers and the cost of the program seems modest at $79.00.

The DOT has mandated instruction on each of four topics for your newest driver employees. In response, we have developed an instructor package that includes everything you will need to conduct a cost effective training session to meet these requirements. The program content has been developed from many reference sources and solves the problem of how you can provide training for your driver work force. You will be able to blend class presentations, group discussions, assign additional reading plus validate student participation through an included master of the DOT mandated course completion certificate. The program comes complete to you via e-mail, CD-Rom or even in a print version, licensed for your company INTERNAL use. You will receive and be able to conduct your own training sessions.

Classroom Instructional Materials:

E Five Separate Slide Programs, in Power Point format, suitable for projection, conversion to overhead transparencies, or following along if duplicates are provided to students attending the session:

ΠDriver wellness: covers health, eating habits, alcohol, obesity, and other related topics (53 slides);

 Fatigue: includes sleep explanations and problems created by fatigue as well as solving sleep problems (53 slides);

Ž Hours of service: Includes explanations of the hours of service rules and an overview of logs (20+ slides), depending on version ordered;

About the Programs

- Each program provides to the presenter a series of "instruction suggestions" as slide notes available for review prior to projection or use;

- Fleet safety or fleet training officers should be able to use these programs as the lessons for meeting the DOT mandate.

- Most general fleet supervisors can quickly learn the material and offer an interesting, DOT compliant program effort.

- Covers the required topics through instructor led presentations and group discussions;

- Offers a flexible way to cover the materials and meet the DOT estimated time requirements of up to 10 hours of training.

E Student Workbook

- A classroom guide that enhances and furthers the materials in the educational sessions.

- Includes the "nitty gritty" details of actions and programs the driver can use in developing his or her own awareness and follow through.

- About 36 pages long, and can easily be printed and duplicated by you for your company use.

E Instructor guide

- An overview manual providing guidance on how best to use the programs; instructional tips and best practices for delivery.
