ADDENDUM TO LSC RESULTS

RECORD OF VOTER’S ROLL FOR THE LAW STUDENTS’ COUNCIL

1.  For 2013, the Election Commission (EC) had agreed a transitional arrangement for the LSC to accommodate the historical practice where LSC elections were not managed by the Election Committee and where COM and HUM combined degree students were allowed to run and vote in the LSC elections.

2.  The Election Regulations state that a student may only vote in the faculty s/he is registered.

3.  As a transitional arrangement, the combined degree students were requested to declare in writing to the Chief Electoral Officer if they wanted to run or vote in LAW. Six (6) COM and fourteen (14) HUM students wrote in to declare to vote in LAW.

4.  The EC further agreed that if combined degree students had not declared that they wish to vote in LAW, their votes in LAW would count if they did not vote in their registered faculty. This decision was made due to time constraints. Two students voted in HUM and LAW and their votes were removed from LAW. Four (4) COM students did not declare and voted only in LAW and fifteen (15) HUM students did not declared and voted only in LAW. These votes were counted in LAW.

5.  The declaration by the combined degree students was important to verify the voter’s roll. The voter’s roll is derived from the Peoplesoft system and based on the faculty in which a student is registered. Therefore, the combined degree student records were manually removed from the faculties in which they were registered to the LAW database for the purposes of the election.

6.  The below table is a summary of the voter’s roll in LAW.

LAW Voter’s Roll / Number of students
Number of students registered in LAW / 539
Add declared COM combined stream / 6
Add undeclared COM combined stream / 4
Add declared HUM combined stream / 14
Add undeclared HUM combined stream / 15
Total Voters in LAW / 578
Note: 2 students voted in LAW and HUM. These two votes were removed from the LAW voters’ roll in line with the requirement of voting in one faculty. The removal of these votes do not change the outcome of the election.

Health Sciences Students’ Council Elections 2013

The Health Students’ Council received insufficient nominations to have an election. Nominations were opened from 8 to 20 August 2013. This was extended to 22 August and again to 4 September to allow for further nominations. Ten nominations were received for twelve positions on the HSSC.

Further extensions were not possible.

The Election Commission decided, after consultation with Undergraduate Academic Sub-council ncil, that the ten (10) nominees below are elected without contest. The incoming faculty council will decide on co-opting further members to have the required twelve (12) member council.

The Election Commission regrets this situation and urges all students to assist the new council in building support for student leadership development and democratic processes.

The Election Committee commends the nominees below for availing themselves and for their exemplary conduct in handling the circumstances beyond their control.
