Clothing for 43.46°N 76.50°W……by the lake

On campus temperatures and weather conditions are heavily influenced by Lake Ontario, and often localized. For those coming from warmer climes, Oswego’s weather is moderately warm, from April through October. Mid-day temperatures average from 11.5C in April to 26.5C in July, then return to 15C by October. So a light sweater or jacket would be plenty of cover for an August evening arrival. August daytime temperatures can very warm. From November to January mid-day temperatures may fall from 8.5C to –1C and then back to 5C by March. Most winters there is considerable “lake-effect” snow in Oswego, although that pattern can be erratic. For those students arriving in January, a heavy jacket/coat or layered shirts and sweaters with gloves and light boots (not leather-soled shoes) will get you from the airport to the campus warmly, and you might buy any serious winter clothing after your arrival, based on what you experience. Large coats will be bulky to pack, and prices in Oswego may be lower than at home even for new items.
