Class Description:
If you are in the construction industry, you understand that to succeed in today's competitive economy - where prime contractors and procuring agencies are shrinking their supplier base and bundling contracts - you have to be ready to seize opportunities as they present themselves and have a cash flow that will support your operation.
If you are a contractor:
o  Who is interested in getting a handle on your business and understanding how to be both competitive and profitable
o  Who wants to grow your business
o  Who wants to learn how to integrate the latest technology (and the right technology for your business), and wants to do so without spending a fortune
o  Who wants a predictable cash flow
Then you are also the contractor who understands that the time is NOW!
This intensive four session program is presented by experts in the construction industry. The classes offer hands-on instruction for on-the-job-site technology to help you work more efficiently.
Topics covered include:
Estimating and Bidding: Subcontractor selection, pre-bid analysis and specification review, pricing, and bid preparation. Emphasis will be on general contracting practices. Instruction on computer applications for estimating and bidding will be provided.
Construction Accounting: A valuable introduction to accounting for the "non-accounting" construction professional. Review the role of the accountant, types of construction businesses, accounting terminology, accounting cycles and job costing, and contractors' financial statements and cash flow management. Perform exercises in accounting for a typical project, including labor, materials, sub-contracts and equipment.
Project Planning and CPM Scheduling: Good scheduling is vital to construction projects. Cover techniques that apply to projects of all sizes - bar charts, critical path networks, and resource allocation and leveling. The course will be conducted in a computer lab, allowing the techniques to be demonstrated on scheduling software using project examples.
Project Administration and Site Supervision: Cover the day-to-day, on-site management for construction, including subcontractor management, mobilization and scheduling, quality control, progress monitoring and problem solving, with special emphasis on change orders, payment requests and proper job-site records.
Using Technology to Improve Management: Learn the right technology to purchase in order to better manage your business, from job dispatching to managing labor costs. The course includes hands-on demonstrations of how to manage a real-time connection between the field and the back office, making your workforce more productive, processes more efficient and customers more satisfied.
Instructor:
Ed Duarte is president, founder, and owner of Aztec Consultants, a San Ramon-based professional construction management and general contracting company. Mr. Duarte has served on many boards including, the YMCA and NorCal Financial Development Corporation. He is a member of the San Ramon Rotary Club, the San Ramon Chamber of Commerce, and Alameda County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Duarte teaches at Cal State East Bay and is a graduate of Leadership San Ramon. He was named the San Ramon Citizen of the Year in 2000.
