Thesis Title: “Reconstructing Reality: A Semiotic Approach to the Mythopoetic Vision of the Feminine World”
Brief Synopsis of Research: Words can be seen as both enabling and disabling in a woman’s self-actualization. Language, a construct of the patriarchal world, is fabricated out of myths that are devoid of a feminine voice. This paper considers how women writers disable the symbolic order through semiotic practices. Analyzing selected works of Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Margaret Atwood, and Angela Carter; the paper identifies and elaborates on how each author uses language to reconstruct reality via mythopoetics. Two processes of mythopoesis emerge: transcending the established symbolic order by creating new semiotic relationships and using established myths to subvert a male-centered reality.
