Earth Science Math Quiz

The purpose of this quiz is to get an idea of each individual’s math skill level on the types of problems you will be asked to solve throughout the year in chemistry. Some questions may seem easy and others may be hard, just do your best.

Directions:

a) Get out a separate piece of paper, pencil and calculator if you have one.

b) Clear EVERYTHING else off your desk.

c) Write your name, date, subject and period in the upper right hand corner of the paper.

d) Title the page “Chemistry Math Quiz” and number from 1-10 vertically.

e) Solve the problems as best you can. Show ALL WORK on problems 2-9. Include units (such as s or seconds for #2.) You may use a calculator but it is not necessary for most questions.

f) Put a box around your final answer and highlight them if you have a highlighter.

1. Round the following numbers off to the tens place:

24.555

1.23

Do the following conversions:

2. How many seconds are there in 1 day?

3. 5.5 kilograms equals many grams? (Hint: There are 1000g in 1 kg)

4. How many liters (L) are in 250 milliliters, if there are 1000 mL in 1L?

Solve for x:

5. 3x + 6 = 33

6. -2(x + 2y) = 4x – y

Solve for n:

7. PV = nRT

Simplify:

8. x9 – x5

x2

9. Use the equation below to find the percentage error.

% error = Valueexperimental – Valueaccepted x 100

Valueaccepted

The experimental value of a rock’s mass was found to be 12.0 g while the accepted value is 10.0 g.

10. Rate your calculator knowledge (on a scale of 1-10.

1 = poor, 10 = good
