Dear Colleagues:

I hope your Fourth of July activities went well and safely. It is the middle of the summer break and time to get away and relax (if you are not teaching summer class – or have Accreditation work to do). Our group of students who went to China made it back home safely and we are pleased. Professor Anna Cortesio and Former Assistant Vice Chancellor Lasana Hotep did a great job leading the students through the tour and ensuring that everyone was safe. I am grateful for their leadership and service to our students. I met our students in Shanghai. I would say that by all measures, the students learned a lot in China.

Jan Holmgren and Transfer Opportunities

Dr. Holmgren is a former President of Mills College. She told me that a group of local independent colleges, including Mills, used to meet with former Peralta Chancellors and worked with them on transfer opportunities for Peralta students. She encouraged me to initiate these meetings again with support from our local independent colleges.

Patti Castro-Alameda WIOA

Ms. Castro is the Executive Director of the Alameda Workforce Invest Opportunity Act. There is a similar organization in Oakland and I served on the Board. We have a rotating seat with Chabot and I told her that Peralta is interested in serving on the Board when our turn comes. There were times when we did not exercise that right and responsibility, but now we are looking to take advantage of some new opportunities to work with the Alameda WIOA.

Open Forum at COA

With the departure of Dr. Joi Blake, I spent some time on the COA campus to hear from faculty, staff and administrators regarding what they wanted in recruiting the interim and permanent successors to Dr. Blake. I heard excellent feedback from those present. The continuation of Dr. Blake’s vision was important to some, while others were interested in a President that will spend a long tenure at the institution. A search for Dr. Blake’s successor will get underway soon. Dr. Fran White and I will share the duties of the Presidency until the search concludes in the fall. I will be acting president of COA until July 15.

Leadership Class on Contracts

The Management and Leadership Development Academy of Peralta (MLDAP) met last week and got a good lesson from our contract Legal Counsel, Ericka Curls-Bartling. The Leadership group learned the terms and particular items to look for in a contract. The session was followed by a presentation by Chief of Staff Crawford on effective elements in creating bios and how to present oneself and one’s profession in public.
