Cell Phones in the Classroom

Cell phones are a very popular tool for communication. These small devices allow an individual to make phone calls or text message other people. Using cell phones is something very familiar to teenagers; however, they are typically not allowed to have cell phones in school. Students should be allowed to use cell phones in the classroom because cell phones would allow for Internet access, they would be important in case of an emergency, and they would allow students to communicate with teachers and classmates.

The first reason students should be allowed to have cell phones in the classroom is because they would allow for Internet access. So much information is available via the Internet and many class projects require research. The convenience of having a cell phone to search for information would make class time and other school time very efficient. In addition, many classrooms do not have computers available for each student. Those who have a cell phone could have access to the Internet from their seat.

Secondly, cell phones could be important methods of communication in case of an emergency. There are times when getting in touch with parents is very important. For example, if a student suddenly gets sick at school, he or she could call or text a parent to come and pick them up. The classrooms in our building have phones, but it is necessary to contact the secretary to make an outside call. Having a cell phone would allow students and teachers to be able to communicate with others in the event of an emergency within the classroom.

Finally, cell phones would allow students to communicate with teachers and classmates. If a student misses a class, he or she could contact the teacher or a classmate to find out what was missed. In addition, the teacher could communicate with students and remind them of important due dates for projects with a text alert. If students were able to communicate via text message, the cafeteria might be a much quieter place.

Some teachers may feel cell phones should not be in the classroom because students would be distracted. However, teachers could establish strict rules about cell phone usage. If these rules are not obeyed, the cell phone could be taken away from the student. There could also be rules about keeping ring tones off. With good planning on the teacher's part, the cell phone could be a very useful tool.

In conclusion, cell phones would be a very beneficial tool in the classroom. Having Internet access would make learning more effective. In addition there are many times the student needs to get in touch with parents and the cell phone would allow them to do that quickly. The ability to communicate with classmates and teachers would be very helpful in a variety of circumstances. With rules to keep cell phone use appropriate, the classroom could be a better place.
